Moltan Roll Bar + Sake – Fresh Sushi in Kits

One of my favourite ways to discover new restaurants is on Instagram. Recently I’ve been seeing gorgeous photos of delicious sushi bowls at a new sushi spot in Kits. Moltan Roll Bar + Sake has just opened and they are already making some big waves. The majority of their dishes sparkle with gold flakes and precise knifework. They serve a variety of fusion Japanese dishes, fresh sashimi and rolls and sandos. However, on this visit my focus was definitely on their dons.

The restaurant is very small with seating for four tables and they do not take reservations. It was busy on the weekend when I went, but the wait was only 15 minutes. Unfortunately for us, they were out of a lot of ingredients for the dishes we wanted to try. In the end we settled on the following three dishes all from the Kaisendon section of their menu.

Kaisendon – Sashimi Bowls and Steak Bowl

The stand out item was the Bluefin & Uni Don. The Bluefin tuna just gleamed from the fattiness of the fish. The uni was fresh and creamy and went perfectly with this indulgent bowl. This bowl was so flavourful that soy and wasabi was truly not necessary.

The Chirashizushi Don was not traditional in preparation. It was much closer to a Korean Hoe-deopbap (raw fish bibimbap). There was a generous amount of sesame oil in this dish and it was served with a spicy chogochujang (vinegar and gochujang based sauce). The fish was very fresh and there was a generous portion. There was cubes of tamago, salmon, hamachi, tuna and sweet shrimp.

Finally we had the Steak Don. This dish had a 7oz tenderloin steak sliced and cooked medium rare topped with onions cooked in sake and butter. An egg yolk crowns the whole dish. This dish was so flavourful and the steak was so tender.

Overall I enjoyed the food here. Everything was fresh and made with care. The service was good, and our tea was constantly refilled. However, it was disappointing that a number of dishes we were hoping to try were not available or they had out of ingredients. I do recommend a visit if you’re looking to indulge in some beautiful sashimi bowls! If I had to choose though, Kun’s Omakase Bar would still be my top pick.
