Holbox LA– Must Try Michelin Bib Gourmand Mexican Food in LA

My first meal in LA was at this extremely highly rated Google spot that is also Michelin Bib Gourmand recommended. Holbox is inside the Mercado La Paloma which is located in the Figueroa Corridor of South Los Angeles. It is a bit hidden and the parking lot is a bit sparse on spots, but if you circle around a few times you should be able to find parking. Once you walk in, head straight towards the back, and Holbox will be on the left hand side. They are counter service only except if you order their Tasting menu which is reservation only. The the tasting menu is available Thursdays & Fridays at 7pm only and will be at the counter. Check out my full review of Holbox LA below!

On our visit we really wanted to try their scallop and uni ceviche which is served in an uni shell but unfortunately it wasn’t available. Inside we got the following:

  • Daily special: Ceviche Mixto and 2 Baja Fish Tacos ($18.00)
  • Kanpachi and Uni Tostada ($22.00)
  • Taco de Pescado al Carbon ($7.00)
  • Scallop Taco ($8.00)

The Ceviche Mixto features Yucatan octopus, wild Mexican shrimp and stripped bass ceviche. This ceviche was bright, refreshing and full of seafood. The shrimp was my favourite as it had a great bouncy texture.

Next we had the Kanpachi and Uni Tostada which features premium kanpachi ceviche topped with 20 grams of Santa Barbara Uni. This was one of my favourite dishes of the day and this trip! The ceviche was so flavourful and the uni was sweet with just a hint of brininess. It was a delight to eat.

The Baja Fish Taco features crispy battered local rockfish, crema, mayo, salsa roja and pico de gallo. The Taco de Pescado al Carbon features Hawaiian kanpachi, homemade mayo, cabbage, moritasauce, pico de gallo and avocado puree. The Scallop Taco features pan seared Maine diver scallop, chile x’catic sauce, caramelized onions, tomato and marinated fennel. Of the three, my favourite was definitely the scallop. The sear was perfect and the smokey flavour was amazing. However, all of them were really quite delicious in their own way, and I wouldn’t hesitate to order them again.
