Rice Burger

Burgers are hardly a new concept, but rice burgers have yet to reach the same level of mainstream popularity as their carb-y bread counterparts in Vancouver. Rice burgers (bread buns are replaced with compressed ‘buns’ of rice) were first introduced in Japan and have since become popular all across Asia. Not too many places offer rice burgers in Vancouver (Marulilu and Kobob are a couple), but Rice Burger takes this simple concept and elevates it with unabashed style and flavour.

Jackson and Austin first started making these delicious burgers in commissaries, but due to their popularity they finally managed to find a brick and mortar to start pumping out even more burgers for their legions of fans.

I was able to drop by earlier this week with Dom and Esther to check out some of their offerings.

Picnic Platter – 4 burgers, 1 popcorn chicken and 1 fries ($30.00)

What we ate:

As part of the Picnic Platter, you get your choice for four rice burgers. We chose the above four and we found that each burger was carefully constructed and stuffed with ingredients. There is definitely a method to eating these burgers and I suggest you have a chat with Jackson so can demonstrate the proper methodology for you!

Kimchi Fries – fries, kimchi, cheese sauce, mayo, green onion and beef ($5.75) + egg ($1.50)

As part of the Picnic Platter you also get an order of fries. We tried their Kimchi Fries + an egg for added richness and it was out of this world. The fries are of the skinny variety (like McDonald’s but better!) and they were fried perfectly. All the components worked well together and the egg just pulled everything together. This is a must order!

Would I come back? Absolutely. In fact, I wish I was still a UBC student so I could have an excuse to come here more often! Jackson (one of the co-owners) is full of energy and you can see how much he genuinely cares about the food and customer satisfaction.
