Four Bistro – Underwhelming Korean Lunch in Downtown Vancouver

Four Bistro is a new Korean restaurant replacing Kim’s House on Seymour Street. I was pretty excited to check this restaurant out during their soft opening as there aren’t a lot of Korean food options in the area.

Soft Tofu Soup ($12.95)

When this arrived at the table to say I was disappointed was an understatement, as the bowl was barely half full. The ingredients in the soup were also quite lackluster – tofu, a bundle of enoki mushroom, a couple sad pieces of kimchi and an egg. The flavour was not bad with a nice spice, but it’s definitely not up to snuff. There is an option to add seafood for an additional $2.00.

Dolsot Bibimbap ($12.95)

The bibimbap fared a bit better than my soup, but the variety of ingredients was a bit sparse. The pan fried egg that was cooked perfectly, which was appreciated. This was served sizzling hot, so a nice rice crust formed which was one of the best parts.

The banchan were not notable, we were served 2 banchan (kimchi and beansprouts) while the other tables had 4 options (including potatoes!). So I’m not sure how they are deciding which customers get what.

Given that this is their soft opening, I hope that they will improve as they iron out their opening kinks. The food execution left much to be desired. The service, however was quite friendly with frequent tea refills.
