Doe Coffee (formerly Pennyroyal Coffee) stands out as a must-visit cafe for coffee aficionados and pastry lovers. Located at 2263 East Hastings Street (just after Nanaimo and Playland), this charming spot is renowned for their croissants, freshly baked daily, and exceptional coffee blends. Doe Coffee prides itself on its diverse selection of single-origin and specialty blends, ensuring a perfect cup for every palate. I came by on a weekday morning and the cafe was bustling with customers. This cafe is a great place to study, meet up with friends or grab a bite on the way to work. There is lots of parking in the area and it’s also very transit friendly. I heard great things about the croissants here so I had to get a few to try. Check ou my full review of Doe Coffee below!
Doe Coffee – Croissants, Pastries and more!
Doe Coffee makes all their baked goods in house including their famous croissants. In addition to the standard double almond, butter croissant and pain au chocolat, Doe Coffee is known for their filled croissants. On my visit I got their Passionfruit Mango Croissant and Croque Monsieur Croissant. All their croissants are $7.50 or less which is on par for croissant pricing in Vancouver. Both croissants are flakey and buttery and absolutely stuffed with filling.
The Croque Monsieur Croissant is probably one of the best croissants I have ever had. The flakey buttery croissant has ham and cheese and it’s so savoury and delicious. The egg yolk on top was the perfect jammy topping.
Not to be beat, the Passionfruit Mango Croissant has a not too sweet filling with a very mango forward flavour. It reminds me of a tropical summer. It was very refreshing.
The staff recommended I try the Matcha Cream Cheese Muffin and the Chocolate Cream Cheese Muffin. The muffins were moist and the addition of the cream cheese made the muffins taste like indulgent cheesecake-brownie hybrids. The muffins weren’t too sweet, and the matcha flavour was very prominent!
The owners are very passionate about coffee. They are always using the best origin beans from around the world and the beans are roasted at their own facility. They use both single origin coffee and blends and you can really taste the fullness in their coffee. In addition to their extensive coffee menu they also have a large selection of tea beverages.
Worth a Try?
Yes! Doe Coffee is firmly at the top of my coffee shop/cafe list. The cafe space itself is super cute with a fair amount of seating. Their drinks and pastries definitely impressed me and I will definitely be back for more delicious croissants! I highly recommend that you check out this spot the next time you’re in the Hastings Sunrise area. Doe Coffee is definitely a hidden gem on Hastings Street that deserves more hype for their excellent croissants and coffee.
