Brunch has landed at House of Dawn Steakhouse in Richmond. The restaurant is known for its Peter Luger style steaks, but the new brunch menu leans lighter. There are four main sections to choose from: House Classic, Toast, Pasta and Handhelds The room looks the same as dinner: dark wood, marble tables, low light. It’s quiet and a little formal for brunch. The food came out quickly. Service was slower, one main server seemed to be covering most of the room. It’s not a casual brunch spot, and it’s not trying to be. I came by on a Sunday morning and it wasn’t too busy, but it did pick up by the time I left. Check out my full review of the new brunch menu at House of Dawn Steakhouse below.

House of Dawn Steakhouse – Brunch Menu
All the dishes come with your choice of coffee, tea, juice, milk or hot chocolate. On our visit we tried:
- Mushroom Toast ($32.00)
- Truffle Pappardelle ($42.00)
- Lobster Linguine ($48.00)
- Lobster Roll ($48.00)

The Mushroom Toast features porcini, cremini, portobello, shimeji topped with pickled shallot and serrano on buttery brioche, ramen egg, green salad or fresh fruit. The buttery brioche was excellent. Lots of flakey layers and pillowy soft. The toast was very decadent with a nice mushroom flavour. The topping of a ramen egg was interesting and I’m not really sure it works with this dish, but it wasn’t bad.

For our side, we went with the fresh fruit and it was a nice assortment.

The Truffle Pappardelle features housemade pappardelle tossed with truffle béchamel sauce, porcini, morel, cremini, portobello, shimeji, parmigiano reggiano, and fresh shaved truffle. I like the mix of mushrooms and the truffle béchamel sauce wasn’t too heavy. The pasta was perfectly al dente. The portion size of this dish was also enormous.

The Lobster Linguine features butter poached lobster tail, housemade squid ink linguine tossed with sauce américaine, bay scallop, white shrimp, pink shrimp and parmigiano reggiano. Similar to the Pappardelle, the portion size of this was very generous. The sauce has a lovely deep seafood flavour and there is no shortage of ingredients.

Last but not least we had to try the Lobster Roll. This was the table favourite with butter poached lobster tail, bay scallop, white shrimp, pink shrimp, housemade dill creme fraiche and yuzu aioli on a buttery brioche bun. It also comes with your choice of fries and onion rings and we went with the latter.

The lobster was sweet and fresh and there was a generous amount of dill creme fraiche. The onion rings were ok, a tad too crispy.
Worth a Try?
It’s a new brunch menu at House of Dawn Steakhouse in Richmond, and it shows. The food is fine and dishes show promise. Service was stretched thin, which slowed the meal, but that’s not unusual for an early launch. The lobster roll and Truffle Pappardelle were the winners for us. As far as brunch in Richmond goes, this one sits somewhere in the middle: decent ingredients, nice room, a few misses, but nothing worth writing off. It’s the kind of place that might be better in a few months, once the kitchen and service settle in.
