Kimu

A and I met up for lunch last Sunday, and we ended up at Kimu because our first choice of restaurant wasn’t open on Sunday! ):

I love how open the restaurant is. The seats weren’t cramped and the overall feeling of the restaurant was very airy.

It’s a bit out of the way, but they have a parking lot, and when we arrived at 12:30 pm it was moderately busy. Unfortunately for us, they forgot to put our order in and we waited for 45 minutes before I had to ask a waitress where our food was (a table of 6 that came in after us was served and finished before we even got our first dish!)

That little blip aside, the food was really good, and I would definitely come back again.

What we ate: Sushi Cake, crab meat, avocado, shitake mushroom, salmon, spicy tuna, tobiko on sushi rice dough and torched with spicy mayo, BBQ sauce, balsamic reduction, caper and garlic chips ($9.50)

I don’t usually order dishes like this and I was pleasantly surprised! Everything worked really well together. A bit too creamy in texture for me personally, but the crispy rice at the bottom definitely helped. I liked that the rice itself didn’t give off an oily feel, and tasted just like the scorched rice you get at the bottom of a stone bowl rice!

What we ate: Aburi Sushi Combo ($12)

This was not bad. A bit on the saltier side, but perfectly serviceable to curb my aburi cravings. Unfortunately the waitress didn’t give us a description of what was served, but from my guess we had beef, hotate, hamachi, tuna, salmon and ebi.

What we ate: Red Dynamite Roll, dynamite roll, seared spicy tuna, jalapeno and tempura flakes on top with spicy mayo and BBQ sauce ($8.50)

This was the only disappointment of our meal. I was drawn in by the seared spicy tuna, but I didn’t taste that at all, and overall the roll was lackluster.

Even though Kimu is slightly out of my area, I would definitely come by again on a lazy weekday for a good sushi fix.
