Castella Cheesecake

I’m sure you’ve all seen the jiggly cheesecake videos on social media. When I was in Japan last year, I had the opportunity to try Rikuro’s Cheesecake and it didn’t disappoint. I also had the chance to try Pablo cheese tarts and those were pretty life changing.  Since then, I’ve been on a quest to find something similar in Vancouver because I’m a pretty big fan of Japanese style cheesecake and cheese tarts. Although I have yet to try Uncle Tetsu (not a fan of queues), I was happy to see Castella Cheesecake open near my office.

I recently had a chance to try some of their signature items, and I was impressed with both the taste and presentation of everything.

 7″ Cheesecake Soufflé ($10.85)

If you’re looking for a jiggly cheesecake, unfortunately you will be disappointed. However, this cheesecake has it’s merits! I wouldn’t really say it’s a “soufflé” cheesecake as it’s not very airy and fluffy. However, the texture is spongey and moist. It’s also not as pretty as their menu photos (especially the edges), but the top was smooth, and the hot stamp was crisp on the cake.

The cake itself was not too sweet, but still had a good cheesy taste which I appreciated.

Creamy Cheese Tarts ($3.25 each or $15 for a box of 6)

These cheese tarts are the best I’ve had in Vancouver so far. These cheese tarts were picture perfect, with a glossy dome. I saw on their Instagram that they are starting to offer different flavours (matcha and chocolate), but I didn’t see any on my visit.

The cheese filling wasn’t too sweet and so smooth and silky. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is looking for a quick treat while shopping on Robson!

Old Fashioned NYC Cheesecake ($5 per slice with Strawberry Sauce +$1.45)

The Old Fashioned New York style cheesecake is their latest offering. Unlike their name sake cheesecake, this was dense and smooth. I’m a fan of both types of cheesecakes and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this slice! It wasn’t too sweet (perfect for Asian palettes), and the graham crumb crust held up well. The cake was delicious on it’s own, but the strawberry sauce added a nice tang to the overall cake.

Would I come back? Yes! Although the store itself is quite small, they tried to maximize the space by adding a few tables for customers to sit down and enjoy their purchases. They have a limited drink menu as well, I will definitely be back to try their Nitro Teas! My recommendation would be to try their cheese tarts!
