Castella Cheesecake – Japanese Inspired Treats #onRobson

To conclude my collaboration with the Robson Business Improvement Association, I wanted to highlight a little cafe gem that is consistently churning out high quality desserts from their namesake cheesecake, to cheese tarts, creme brûlées and even ice cream!

Castella Cheesecake recently introduced a new line of ice cream treats to their dessert roster and I couldn’t wait to try them!

Their Japanese Buttermilk Ice Cream comes either in a cup (with several different topping choices) or in a cone. On this visit, I decided to go with the cone because I wanted to taste the buttermilk ice cream in its intended form.

The aesthetics for this cone were on point. I loved the swirl design and it reminded me of the Cremia ice cream I had in Japan (and similar to the ice cream at Kokoro Tokyo Mazesoba). There was a tangy taste from the buttermilk, so the ice cream itself had a faintly cheesecake flavour. The cone was standard and crisp.

I couldn’t leave without grabbing a cheesecake and some of their cheese tarts to go.

Double Baked Cheese Tarts – molten creamy Japanese cheesecake tarts ($3.50 each)

There are three cheese tart options currently on offer – Regular, Double Baked and Chocolate Oreo. I went with the Double Baked option because I prefer my cheese tarts with a little more dense, and these didn’t disappoint. Extremely creamy and cheesy, this was a not too sweet treat that really hit the spot.

Their Japanese cheesecake is as light and fluffy as always. My favourite way of eating this is right out of the refrigerator so that the texture is a slightly more set and the cheese taste is more prominent.

The buttermilk ice cream is a welcome addition to the menu at Castella Cheesecake. The service is self serve (pay and find seating), but the employees are always cheerful and accommodating. It’s a cozy little spot to enjoy some light and cheesy desserts!
