YEW Seafood + Bar – Falling in Love with YEW’s Seasonal Menu

The menu at YEW Seafood + Bar changes seasonally to showcase the best in local produce and seasonal ingredients, and I had the opportunity to sample some of their new fall dishes.

Grilled Octopus – butternut squash, crispy grains, smoked onion aioli ($22.00)

The octopus was extremely tender with a lovely smokey flavour from the grill. The squash was soft, and the sweetness from the squash complimented the octopus. This was a great start and set the tone for the rest of the meal.

Seared Scallops – beet Agrodolce, shaved cauliflower, mint crispy rice, pickled shallots ($34.00)

The scallops is a dish off their lunch menu. The scallops were sweet and seared perfectly. The shaved cauliflower was delicate and cripsy, and didn’t overwhelm the natural delicate flavour of the scallops. The beet agrodolce was quite overpowering and threw off the overall balance of the dish.

Sablefish – dashi scented beans, jalapeño, kale, crispy rice cake, charred cucumber, radish ($42.00)

This dish was the winner of the night for me. The sablefish is glazed with a gochujang based sauce which adds a slight heat to the dish. The sablefish was moist and full of flavour. The cirspy rice cake was crispy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. It was a great textural contrast to the overall softness of the dish.

Seared Lingcod – gnocchi parisienne, mushrooms, dressed greens, peppercorn sauce ($34.00)

The gnocchi was different from the traditional ones I’ve tried. They are smaller than usual and didn’t have potato in them. They tasted like ultra crispy bits of cheese and the crispy texture was delightful. The mushrooms were earthy and contrasted well with the lingcod.

‘Fall-en’ Stone – banana mousse, Makrut lime cream, kalamansi marmalade ($13.00)

I didn’t try this dish, as I am banana adverse, however everyone seemed to enjoy it and commented that it was packed full of banana flavour.

Beyond the Black Forest – rosemary mousse, amarena cherry, chocolate shortbread, raspberry sorbet ($13.00)

This was my favourite dessert of the night. The chocolate shortbread had a subtle buttery chocolate taste. I was worried that the rosemary would overwhelm the dessert, but it was a light floral taste that permeated the smooth mousse. The raspberry sorbet was tart and refreshing. I cannot wait to eat this dessert again!

Oven Roasted Pear + BC Blueberry Crumble – spiced caramel, housemade vanilla ice cream ($13.00)

This was a very homey dessert that showcased the freshness of BC produce. The pears were sweet with a nice firm texture. The housemade vanilla ice cream was creamy, sweet and a perfect ending to dinner.

Overall I enjoyed dish from the new fall menu. Everything was a home run for me, and the service as always was on point.
