Chewie’s Biscuit Co – Comfort Food Done Right in Kitsilano

Chewie’s Biscuit Co has has been bringing their southern charm to Kitsilano for the past year with their mouthwatering buttermilk biscuit creations. They just launched their new revamped menu, so I stopped by earlier this week to try out some of their classics as well as their new ‘Fried Chicken Friday’, which is only available on Friday during their new evening hours (5-9 PM).

Chicken & Biscuit Waffles – 2 golden fried chicken thighs, crisp biscuit waffle, maple syrup ($17.00)

This is the first time I saw a biscuit waffle on a menu and I was surprised by how much I liked it. I was worried that it would be similar to the food items that get waffle’d in a waffle iron (anyone remember Will It Waffle?) where it’s basically a squished piece of food, but this tasted more like a waffle with the essence of a buttermilk biscuit. The chicken was moist and juicy and this was the perfect play on “Chicken and Waffles”.

Steak & Eggs – seared skirt steak topped with chimichurri sauce, buttermilk biscuits, 2  fried eggs, hashbrowns, hollandaise ($18.00)

For all your bulking friends – this is the perfect dish for them. The sunny side up egg was glistening and it was so satisfying to poke the yolk. As with all the dishes, the biscuits were the stars of the dish. They were the perfect vehicle for all the components of the plate.

Fried Chicken Poutine – chicken breast, french fries, homemade sausage gravy, cheese curds and green onion ($14.00)

The chicken was moist even though it was a breast piece. However it seemed a bit unnecessary as it was just plopped on top. The poutine was a solid rendition with a delicious savoury sausage gravy.

Crab Benny – butter poached Chilean crab, buttermilk biscuit, smashed avocado, 2 poached eggs, hollandaise and hashbrowns ($20.00)

The crab was plentiful and the delicate crab flavour wasn’t overwhelmed by all the other components of the dish. This benny may very well have dethroned my favourite benny of all time from 33 Acres Brewing Company. I’m not usually a fan of hollandaise but this was light with a lovely lemon flavour.

Fried Chicken Friday – crispy chicken supreme, maple glaze, awesome slaw, warm potato salad ($19.00)

This new special is only available on Friday evenings, but I wish it could be an everyday thing! The chicken was perfectly fried with the most delicious maple glaze – it was finger licking good. The slaw was served warm, and my preference would be for it to be a cold slaw with more zing to contrast with the heavier flavours of the chicken and warm potato salad, but it was still delicious.

Biscuit Cinnamon Bun – cinnamon, brown sugar, cream cheese icing ($4.00)

Disclaimer – I’m not actually a fan of cinnamon or cinnamon buns, but this creation might have just changed my mind for life. This bun was so delicious. I loved the slightly harder biscuit exterior that gave way to a soft and fluffy interior that was dripping in brown sugar and cinnamon. Overall the biscuit wasn’t too sweet and it was the perfect end to our indulgent southern brunch dinner.

I really enjoyed my dinner at Chewie’s Biscuit Co. The service was so friendly and the vibe was awesome. The food was excellent and I can’t wait to be back again. The really live up to their namesake because their biscuits are the best I’ve ever had.
