Market by Jean Georges – Elegant Happy Hour in Downtown Vancouver

I’ve been to Market by Jean Georges several times for lunch and dinner, but this is my first time trying their Happy Hour. Their Happy Hour runs from 3-6 PM in the lounge and they have a pretty wide and varied food menu and drink menu on offer.

Located inside the beautiful Shangri-La hotel, Market is accessible via the hotel lobby on West Georgia Street.

Lunessence ‘Quartet’, Aromatic Blend ($7.00)

This is one of my favourite wines, and I was so happy that this wine was the rotating special. It’s got strong muscat notes which I adore. It’s an off dry wine with a lovely floral finish.

Complimentary Popcorn

This popcorn is so addictive, I mowed through three bowls straight. It’s simple buttered popcorn with a light sprinkle of chili powder.

Steelhead Sashimi – crispy rice, chipotle emulsion ($10.00)

This is my favourite dish at Market, and I’ll be very sad to see it go when the restaurant closes for good in the new year. The sashimi was thick and fresh and the crispy rice add a nice crunch to the dish.

Strozzapreti & Cheese – Gruyère, herb crumbs, watercress ($9.00)

This is not your average mac and cheese. It’s one of the fanciest mac and cheeses I’ve had and it was so delicious. The Gruyère added a nice nutty flavour to the dish and the pasta was perfectly cooked. If they offered this as an entree I would be all over it as the perfect lunch.

Buttermilk Cauliflower Bravas – smoked paprika, mustard dip ($8.00)

This was another favourite dish. The cauliflower was crisp and slightly spicy. The buttermilk added a nice tang to the dish. We ordered another one of these because they were so addictive to eat.

Black Truffle Fries – parmigiano-reggiano, chive, aioli ($9.00)

The fries were pretty standard. Fried well – crisp on the outside and soft and potato-y on the inside. I could smell the truffle, but I couldn’t really taste it. There was a generous pile of parmigiano-reggiano on top.

Service as always was top notch. Our water and popcorn was constantly refilled, and our server came by frequently to check in on us. In terms of value I think this is one of the best happy hours in Vancouver. The beautiful location, delicious and well priced food as well as excellent service makes this a stand out happy hour for me. I will be sad to see this go in the new  year.
