Takenaka is the brain child of chef Shogo Takenaka, the owner and chef of Kingyo Izakaya and Raisu. They always have great promotions going on (BOGO on a lot of their signature items) so make sure you follow them on Instagram! One of their signature items is their Uni Lovers Home Temaki Kit. This kit is a DIY version of their famous Uni hand roll. It’s a great interactive way to enjoy this delicious dish. The Takenaka Uni Temaki Kit is the perfect stay at home activity.
If you preorder via their website, you will need to pick it up at 1370 East Georgia Street in East Van. Takenaka is also a food truck. Their food truck has a full kitchen so they can prepare everything in the truck. You can also order delivery through UberEats (use my code: eats-cecic463ui for a discount) and DoorDash.
The Uni Lovers Home Temaki Kit ($75.00) features local BC uni, snow crab, ikura, yuzu tobiko, shiso leaf, and scallop. On the side you have Japanese sushi rice and vacuum sealed nori. Everything is already prepared so you just need to assemble it.
The uni is so fresh and thick! All the ingredients worked so well together and this was such a fun activity to do with my family. This kit will make 5 servings, but I think you could make 8 servings if you don’t overload each one. I like that the seaweed is vacuum sealed because it helps it stay fresh and crisp. It’s important you eat the hand roll after you assemble it or the nori will get soggy and have a very unpleasant chewy texture.
Overall this was a great family activity for me and my family. All the ingredients were super fresh and the kit itself was impressive to behold. For $75 it may seem steep price wise, but there really is an abundance of fresh and quality seafood that makes this kit worth it.
