Sushi Bar Maumi – Authentic Japanese Omakase in Vancouver

Sushi Bar Maumi is a traditional and small Japanese sushi bar featuring reservation only omakase. This small restaurant only has 2 seatings per day for 9 people per seating. Sushi Bar Maumi serves Edomae sushi with fish directly imported from Japan. There is a very quiet and reserved air in the restaurant. Chatting is at a minimum and guests are encouraged to not use their phones, although you can take a quick snap of your own sushi. The Sushi Bar Maumi omakase is $80 per person and includes 11 pieces of nigiri sushi and miso soup. However, if you are not full after this, you have the option to add more nigiri sushi.

Sushi Bar Maumi Omakase

Chef Maumi Ozaki will serve you sushi piece by piece. To enjoy the full potential of each piece, you should eat it immediately. Here are some quick snaps from my visit, however the fresh sheet changes daily.

Each piece was so fresh and succulent. It was truly an experience to watch Chef in action as he carefully made each piece. No soy sauce is necessary because chef will apply sauces as necessary. At Sushi Bar Maumi here are 4 different homemade sauces.

My favourite from the set was the uni nigiri. I am a huge uni fan and Bafun uni from Hokkaido is one of my favourites, however it is harder to find in Vancouver. This was so light, sweet and fresh. If I could I would have the entire tray!

Overall, this is an omakase you should try at least once. It has been on my food bucket list for a while, so I am glad I got to check it off at last! Guests are encouraged to use your hands to eat (towels are provided), but you can use chopsticks if you wish. If you are looking for a more casual omakase experience I recommend Sushi Bar Shu or The Lobby Lounge at the Fairmont Pacific Rim.
