Holy Mochi Donuts – New Spot for Mochi Donuts in Metro Vancouver

If there is one dessert I miss more than anything from Japan, it’s mochi donuts. These little chewy fried balls of perfection are so hard to find locally. There are a few spots offering these delectable treats, but not as many as I had hoped. Holy Mochi Donuts is a brand new spot offering made-fresh-daily treats for preorder and pickup at Mindful Juice Bar in Surrey. The donuts are made at Core Kitchen (a commercial commissary kitchen) in Langley. These delicious donuts are the perfect treat even if you’re gluten free.

What are Mochi Donuts

Mochi donuts are a very popular treat in Japan. They originate from Mister Donut and are known as “pon de ring”. Mochi donuts have a chewy like texture on the inside (like mochi) and a deep-fried donut crust. Mochi is made from short-grain glutinous rice which helps to give it it’s signature chewy texture.

Holy Mochi Donuts kindly dropped of a Assorted Mochi Donut Box for me to try. They currently have two options on their website:

The Assorted Mochi Donut Box ($19.95) features a half dozen donuts with rotating flavours. The current flavour offering are: Cafe Sua Da (Vietnamese Coffee), Cookies & Cream, Earl Grey, Matcha Green Tea, Milk & Cereal and Strawberry Pocky.

All the mochi donut bases have a light crisp exterior with a nice chewy center. The glazes aren’t too sweet, but there is plenty of it on the donut. I appreciate some of the more unique flavours like Milk & Cereal, and Cafe Sua Da. The Asian flavours are a true stand out for me.

My favourites from the box are: Cafe Sua Da, Milk & Cereal and Strawberry Pocky, although they were all very delicious! The Milk & Cereal had a nice crunch from the Fruity Pebbles cereal. The Cafe Sua Da has a very strong coffee flavour which was very tasty. All the donuts tasted great with a nice hot cup of tea.

The donuts are slightly heavier than what I am used to in Japan, however they are still a very solid rendition and definitely has me itching to go back to Japan.
