Sashimiya Review – You Need to Try the Spot Prawn and Uni Nigiri Special

Sashimiya is a great little hidden gem in Downtown Vancouver serving up beautiful sushi and sashimi. Chef Takayuki Omi is behind this little shop and you can see the level of care and quality from his Fairmont Pacific Rim days reflected at Sashimiya. At Sashimiya you can purchase everything you need to make your own hand rolls, cones, nigiri and chirashi at home. But you can also purchase already made sushi and sashimi to go. Earlier this week, Trudy and I saw their spot prawn feature on Instagram and we knew we had to try it immediately. Check out my full Sashimiya review below!

The current feature at Sashimiya to celebrate spot prawn season in BC is a Spot Prawn Nigiri with Uni and Ikura ($5.00). Trudy and I both let out little screams of happiness when we tried this for the first time. The spot prawn was so fresh and sweet and the uni and ikura add the perfect touch of brininess. IT IS SO GOOD. We ordered 6, but we kind of wish we got 8 (it was really divine). This special is contingent on Chef being able to procure fresh spot prawns, so definitely call ahead to see if it is available. Trudy and I are already planning when we can go back and get more!

In addition to this delicious nigiri special, we also got a $75 sashimi platter for 2 to share. All the sashimi was of course expertly prepared and so fresh! Included in the platter was various cuts of tuna, hirame, hamachi, salmon, hotaru ika (firefly squid), tako (octopus), abalone and more. Trudy and I had no problem devouring this platter because it was so tasty!

As if that wasn’t enough, we also got the Bara Chirashi. Look at the size of the spot prawn! All the cubes of sashimi went well with the perfectly cooked sushi rice and cucumber. It’s a great grab and go lunch!

Worth a Try?

Absolutely! This little shop really blows all other Japanese grocers out of the water. Dare I say it’s even better than the majority of sushi restaurants in Vancouver! You can really tell Chef Taka is very passionate about what he does as it is reflected in the quality and care of food at Sashimiya. Definitely check them out if you are in the are, but it is worth a drive out! They are also available on Uber Eats!
