AFURI Ramen + Dumpling – Ramen in Richmond

Cold and wet weather is in full swing this January in Vancouver and what better than ramen to warm you up? AFURI Ramen + Dumpling has been my go to for years, ever since they first opened in 2019. When they first opened, they had kiosks where you could order from, similar to what you find in Japan. However, they have since removed the kiosks and have a more traditional ordering method (servers at your table). Check out my updated review of Afuri Ramen + Dumpling below!

AFURI Ramen + Dumpling – Small Plates

To start our meal we got a few of their newer appetizer items:

  • Ringo Kaiso Salad
  • Yuzu Shio Edamame
  • Crispy Egg
  • Agedashi Tofu
AFURI Ramen + Dumpling - Ramen in Richmond ringo kaiso salad

To start we had the refreshing Ringo Kaiso Salad which features apple, seaweed, shio dressing, fried wonton skin, green onion and sesame. This was a really refreshing salad, and the slight sweetness of the apples is a nice contrast to the rest of the greens. The Yuzu Shio Edamame is a twist on your classic edamame with yuzo shio sauce and black pepper. The yuzu adds a nice zip to the edamame and it’s a great appetizer to nibble on while waiting for your mains.

AFURI Ramen + Dumpling - Ramen in Richmond crispy egg jammy ramen egg with crispy exterior and deep orange yolks

The Crispy Egg features a crispy ramen egg, sweet chili mayo, frisee, green onion and shio dressing. This was my personal favourite as the egg was a perfect jammy ramen egg and the exterior was nice and crisp without being too oily.

The Agedashi Tofu features fried tofu, vegetarian dashi broth, grated daikon radish, shiitake mushroom, shishito peper, and nori seaweed. This was a fairly standard appetizer. The tofu was crisp, but got soggy quite quickly because it was sitting in the sauce. But overall, a good starter if you love tofu.

Donburi and Ramen

For our mains we went with:

  • Aburi Koro Chasu Don
  • Ebi Wonton Ramen
  • Yuzu Shio Ramen
AFURI Ramen + Dumpling - Ramen in Richmond aburi koro chashu don

The Aburi Koro Chasu Don features grilled kakuni pork, green onion, grated daikon, yuzu shoyu sauce, pickled vegetables and rice. This was a personal favourite as the grilled smokey flavour of the pork works so well with the yuzu sauce and the pickled vegetables.

The Ebi Wonton Ramen features shoyu tare, chicken broth, five spice, pork crumbles, shrimp wonton, and thin noodles. This was slightly spicy and very Chinese in taste. The wonton had a nice silky wrapper and the shrimp filling was bouncy and tasty.

Finally, we couldn’t go to Afuri without having one of their classics – the Yuzu Shio Ramen. This ramen features shio tare, chicken broth, bamboo shoot, chashu, egg, nori, yuzu and thin noodles. This was a table favourite as the yuzu broth was very refreshing to balance out the heavier chashu.
