I recently visited Kaneko Hannosuke at The Amazing Brentwood and was thoroughly impressed by the quality of food and service. Especially since this is just an out post inside a food court, the presentation was on point. Kaneko Hannosuke is a very popular chain of tempura restaurants from Japan. They have been very popular since opening in Vancouver as one of the few spots specializing in tempura. Kaneko Hannosuke Brentwood – Tempura Bowls
The menu is very straightforward with a variety of tempura bowls that showcase their best offerings. All Tempura Bowls are served with a side of miso soup and pickled ginger. I went with my family and we got the following:
- Premium Tempura Bowl ($19.95)
- Oyster Tempura Bowl ($17.95)
- Sea Scallop Tempura Bowl ($17.95)
The Premium Tempura Bowl features conger eel, shrimp, kakiage (mixed seafood tempura), soft boiled egg, and green beans. The conger eel is a total show stopper as it is massive (almost two hand spans long!). All the bowls are served in to-go bowls. The rice and tempura are in a removable plastic tray and you can remove the top from the paper bowl and place the tempura in the bowl.
The Oyster Tempura Bowl features oyster, shrimp, kakiage (mix seafood tempura), soft boiled egg, seaweed and green bean. The oyster was creamy on the inside with a crisp exterior. Overall, this was my favourite bowl because the oysters were so tasty.
The Sea Scallop Bowl features sea scallop, shrimp, kakiage (mixed seafood tempura), soft boiled egg, seaweed, green bean. The scallops were a good size, with a nice texture.
Essentially all the bowls feature one main protein (e.g. scallop, oyster, chicken) and all the side tempuras are the same. All the bowls are served with a sauce bottle on the side. That way the tempura stays nice and crispy. Also, you can add the sauce amount to your preference.
Kaneko Hannosuke Brentwood – Bottled Drinks
There are three bottled drinks available:
- Milk Tea
- Fruit Tea
- Passion Fruit Lemonade
They are available as add-ons to your bowl for $4 (Milk Tea) and $4.50 (Tea and Lemonade). You can also get them a la carte for $5 (Milk Tea) and $5.50 (Tea and Lemonade).
Worth a Try?
Yes! This is a solid addition to TABLES at The Amazing Brentwood. The wait time was about 10-15 minutes as they fry everything up fresh. As it is in the food court, the kitchen is an open concept and you can see all the action as they make everything to order. It’s pretty straightforward, you order at the till and the cashier will pass you a buzzer. Once your order is ready the buzzer will ring and then you can collect your tray. I noticed that previously they had the tempura in rectangle boxes, but it seems they have now changed to bowls.
