What is Onigiri?

Onigiri is a Japanese snack food that consists of a ball or triangle-shaped rice ball that is usually filled with savory ingredients such as pickled plum, seasoned seaweed, or grilled salmon. It’s a simple yet delicious snack that can be found in convenience stores, markets, and restaurants all over Japan. One of the things I love about Onigiri is that it’s a convenient and portable snack that’s perfect for on-the-go. It’s also very affordable, which makes it an excellent option for a quick and satisfying meal or snack.

Authentic Japanese Breakfast from $10

One of the best value deals in town is the $10 authentic Japanese breakfast from Takenaka Onigiri Cafe. Starting from 8 am – 11 am you can get 1 onigiri (filling is extra) + 2 small dishes + salad + unlimited miso soup for just $10! That’s such an insane deal for breakfast! The filling prices range from $2-10 which isn’t too bad.

The Ikura Onigiri and Mentaiko Onigiri are two must orders for me. If sets aren’t your thing, you can also order the onigiri al a carte. These are made fresh to order, so there was a bit of a wait for these. Takenaka Onigiri Cafe has since stopped taking take out and online orders so that they can focus on dine-in customers. Hopefully that will reduce the wait times.

Worth a Try?

Yes! $10 for breakfast in Vancouver is an absolute steal. This meal was really filling and homey in the best way. The miso soup was so hearty (full of daikon and mushroom pieces) and the free refills is such a bonus. You can make the breakfast as fancy as you want depending on your filling of choice and I can guarantee that every filling is delicious and fresh.
