Last month when I was walking around Downtown Vancouver, I noticed that Tractor Digital had closed up shop. The windows were papered up with Aburi logo paper so I was very curious to see what would be coming next. Turns out it’s going to be a Japanese style bagel shop! WA-BAGEL By Aburi will feature sweet and savoury bagels. These bagels will available in a constellation of inventive and classic flavours and fillings. WA-BAGEL will specialize in chewy and airy Japanese-style bagels. This new concept will be at 666 Burrard Street and will be a counter service spot to start. There will also be take out and delivery options.
WA-BAGEL’s bagels are made with Canadian flour and a koji-based yeast. When it opens in late-spring, WA-BAGEL will have 14 flavours of bagels and bagel sandwiches to start. Flavours will include red bean paste and cream cheese, sweet potato and black sesame.
For savoury options there will be Aburi Market’s fresh cut salmon lox & scallion cream cheese sandwich, and eggplant and bacon with miso and cheese. There will also be a variety of drinks, such as coffee and tea.
As much as I love a good New York style bagel, I have a soft spot for Japanese bagels. Their lighter texture is such a dream to bite into. The flavours are also right up my alley, so I can’t wait for their opening in late Spring! Will you be giving this new spot a try?
