Yin Ji Chang Fen – Best Congee and Rice Rolls in Richmond

Yin Ji Chang Fen is a famous chain of rice roll and congee restaurants that originates from Guangzhou. They are known as the “King of Chang Fen” aka ‘King of Rice Rolls’. The use traditional techniques to make their rice noodle rolls and the rolls are always incredibly thin and delicate. This is their first location in Western Canada. Their menu is comprehensive with many different varieties of rice rolls to choose from as well as congee options and other popular Hong Kong snack foods like curry fish balls. Check out my full review of Yin Ji Chang Fen below!

Yin Ji Chang Fen – Rice Roll and Congee Menu

For our late lunch we went with:

Yin Ji Chang Fen Richmond Dough Stick Rice Noodle Roll

The Dough Stick Rice Noodle Roll had a nice crispy Chinese donut on the inside that went well with the delicate rice noodle roll. The star of the show was definitely the Shrimp and King Mushroom with Truffle Paste Rice Noodle Roll. If you love truffles, this dish is for you. There is such a strong truffle smell when this dish comes to the table and the mushrooms add a great textural contrast to the silky smooth rice noodle roll.

The Shrimp with Chives Rice Noodle Roll is a classic. The shrimp have a nice snap to them and there is also cabbage folded into the rice roll.

Yin Ji Chang Fen Fresh Water Fish Sliced Congee

The Fresh Water Fish Sliced Congee is the best congee I have had in a long time. The congee base was so smooth and the fresh water fish maintains a really great snap (unlike previously frozen fish which is really soft). This dish was outstanding and a must order dish for me. I adore congee and preserved century egg, so I recommend adding it to this dish!

Yin Ji Chang Fen – Asian Snacks and Drinks

We decided to also order a few more unique snack items that we haven’t seen before:

Two really unique side dishes that we got were the Fish Skin Tossed with Soy Sauce and Green Onion and Thai Style Cold Chicken Feet.

Yin Ji Chang Fen Fish Skin Tossed with Soy Sauce and Green Onion

The fish skin has a really nice texture that’s a cross between crunchy and soft. There is a strong sesame oil taste to this dish and it goes well with the sharp green onion.

The chicken feet dish was a wall special (a tapped up poster on the wall) and it was a table favourite. The dish was light and refreshing with plenty of pickled carrots and daikon. The chicken feet are deboned, but be careful when eating the because there was a few pieces of bone in our dish.

Yin Ji Cheng Fen Richmond Hong Kong Style Frozen Milk Tea

And of course we have to try the Instagram famous Hong Kong Style Frozen Milk Tea. I love that the ice is on the outside because I can enjoy my drink without worrying about the ice diluting it.

Worth a Try?

Yes! This place was incredibly busy even at 1:30 PM on a weekday. The service was fast and efficient. Once you get a table, you can write down your order on a pad of paper that’s on the table and then the waitress will take your sheet. The food came out relatively quickly and everything was hot and fresh. I was particularly impressed with their Fresh Water Fish Sliced Congee. The portion size was enormous and they were very generous with the fish slices. I highly recommend you order this congee!
