If you love rice rolls, you’ll want to check out the newly opened May Rice Roll & Congee in North Burnaby. This spot takes over the former Hakkaku Ramen on Hastings Street.
May Rice Roll & Congee Menu
May Rice Roll & Congee specializes in steamed rice rolls with fillings ranging from seafood, pork, beef, mushroom, shrimp and vegetarian.
Prices range from $7.85 to $9.25 and you add extra ingredients for $3.00. There is also an option to add egg for $1.75.
Also on the menu is their housemade congee with many variations that will be sure to suit everyone. From their House Special Congee ($9.85), Preserved Egg and Pork Congee ($9.85), Seafood Congee ($9.85), Slice Fish Congee ($9.85) and Plain Congee ($5.85), there are so many options for less than $10!
Additional toppings to dress up your congee include: egg ($1.75), century egg ($2.75) and salted duck egg ($2.75).
They have an excellent breakfast combo deal for one rice roll and one congee (of your choice) for $14.95. This combo is available daily from 8:30 am – 11:30 am.
May Rice Roll & Congee – Breakfast Combo
I went by with my mum and sister to try out their breakfast combos. We ordered two combos to share between the three of us and it was plenty of food. What we got:
There was a really good balance of rice roll and filling. Each rice sheet was also very thin and didn’t stick together. The soy sauce provided on the side was very good, with a slightly sweet taste. It went very well with the rice rolls. The Shrimp and Scallop Rice Roll has three bouncy shrimp and a handful of baby scallops.
The Shu Mai Rice Roll with Special Sauce was not what I expected. For some reason I thought it would be chopped up shu mai mixed with rice rolls. But in fact this is like Hong Kong style rice rolls. So it’s chopped up steamed rice rolls and shu mai mixed with hoisin sauce, peanut sauce and soy sauce. This was a very generous portion and the sauce to roll ratio was perfect.
The congee came piping hot to the table, and stayed hot for most of our visit. The House Special Congee features pork, pork liver and kidney. The congee was very smooth and there were plenty of ingredients in the congee. This bowl came with a few pieces of Chinese doughnut on top.
The Preserved Egg and Pork Congee features pork slices and preserved century egg. Similar to the House Special Congee, the congee base was smooth and flavourful. The preserved egg came in large chunks which is exactly the way I like it. This is always a must order congee for me if it is on the menu.
Worth a Try?
Yes! This is a very homey family run restaurant and you can tell how much love they put into each dish. They were very friendly and always topped up our tea. It wasn’t super busy when we went on a weekday, but they had a steady stream of customers for take out.
