Oiso Kimchi Cafe is a quaint Korean restaurant located in the Norquay Village neighbourhood. It’s just down the street from Purdys Chocolatier Factory and across the street from Norquay Park. The small and unassuming spot is bright and airy with plenty of indoor tables. It is a no frills order at the counter and sit down type of spot. There is a good variety of dishes to choose from including their signature Kimchi Stew, Kimchi Makooksoo Noodle (perfect for the summer!) and other meat dishes. They have been open for just over a year now, and they recently introduced a breakfast menu. Check out my full review below!
Oiso Kimchi Cafe – New Breakfast Menu
The new breakfast menu is perfect for delicious homey comforting dishes to kick start your day. The soups are warm and comforting and great for the upcoming cold weather.
On my visit we got:
- Gamjatang ($21.00)
- Korean Army Stew ($19.00 +$3.00 for ramen)
- Bulgogi Beef Kimbap ($8.00)
- Tteokbokki ($11.00 + $3.00 for Gimmari) rice cake, gochujang, fishcake, scallion
If you remember Damso in Downtown Vancouver, you’ll remember their quintessential Gamjatang. If you miss it, the great news is you can now get it at Oiso! The Gamjatang features pork bone soup, potato, cabbage, wild sesame, scallion and a bowl of rice. It’s a super hearty bowl that will definitely leave you full. There are plenty of porkbones and potatoes in this soup and it’s not too spicy.
The Korean Army Stew aka Budaejjigae is always a go to order for me. This classic dish features Spam, bacon, hotdog, baked beans, cheese, kimchi and rice cake.
This version was spot on, with plenty of ingredients and perfectly cooked ramen noodles.
There are two kimbap options at Oiso Kimchi Cafe – Beef and Tuna. The gimbap here is really good with a great rice to ingredient ratio. This gimbap is pretty traditional with egg, cucumber, fishcake, crabstick, carrot, burdock and radish pickle.
And you can’t order kimbap without ordering Tteokbokki! This version was saucy and spicy, just the way I like it. The rice cake was nice and chewy and there was plenty of fishcakes mixed in. I always dip half my gimbap roll into the sauce and it’s just the perfect combination.
Worth a Try?
Yes! I’m a huge fan of Oiso Kimchi Cafe and I’m so happy they have added new menu items. It’s a great spot to for a meal and the service is always spot on. Whether you come here for breakfast, lunch or dinner, you are sure to find delicious authentic Korean dishes.
