If you’re looking for bold, comforting, and deeply flavourful food in Chinatown, Vancouver, there’s a hidden gem that’s already drawing crowds for all the right reasons. Golden Smell Mee is one of the most exciting new additions to Vancouver’s culinary scene. Rooted in family history and revived with love, this modern Malaysian-Singaporean eatery offers a taste of Southeast Asian street food that is elevated, soulful, and unapologetically rich. I went by on a weekend afternoon and Golden Smell Mee was full and busy. Check out my full Golden Smell Mee review below!
A Revival of Family Tradition in Vancouver’s Chinatown

Located at 142 East Pender Street, Golden Smell Mee opened in May 2025 and is a beautiful continuation of a family legacy that began in 1986. Back then, the original Bee Kim Heng, which means “Beautiful Golden Smell”, started out in the Golden Gate Centre as a small Malaysian-Singaporean jerky deli. Over time, it expanded into separate shops, offering both grilled meats and noodle dishes across Vancouver.
Now, the third generation has brought it all home—reuniting the family’s recipes and culinary vision under one name, in one space, in the heart of Vancouver’s historic Chinatown.
Golden Smell Mee Menu – Appetizers
Whether you’re planning a Chinatown food crawl or searching for the best Malaysian food in Vancouver, this place should be at the top of your list. To start we got the following from their appetizers menu:
- Satay Skewers (6 for $18.00) – grilled skewers of marinated beef or chicken served with a rich peanut sauce, cucumber and pineapple.
- Roti Canai with Curry Dip ($10.95) – flaky, crispy flatbread with curry sauce
- BKH Short Rib ($23.95) – tender, marinated beef short ribs grilled to perfection over an open flame.

Golden Smell Mee’s Satay Skewers are a must-order. You get a choice of grilled beef or chicken, marinated to perfection and grilled over open flame. The result? Slightly smoky, tender meat with crispy edges. The house-made peanut sauce is velvety, rich, and just a little sweet—ideal for drizzling or dunking. Fresh cucumber and pineapple chunks add a refreshing, crunchy contrast.

The Roti Canai is so flaky and crispy on the outside, pillowy and warm inside. The curry sauce is so fragrant and rich without being too heavy. And in traditional Malaysian style they serve the Roti Canai with a side of sugar.

A nod to their original Bee Kim Heng jerky roots, the BKH Short Rib is pure grilled perfection. Marinated in a sweet-savoury glaze, these beef short ribs are grilled until beautifully caramelized and slightly charred. Tender, sticky, and packed with umami, this dish hits that perfect middle ground between smoky BBQ and Southeast Asian spice. This stack of beef ribs is delectable and a must order dish.
Golden Smell Mee Menu – Fresh Made GSM Noodles
For our noodle dishes we went with:
- Char Kway Teow ($18.95) – wok fried flat rice noodles with chinese sausage, egg, bean sprouts and chives in a savoury dark soy sauce (add shrimp $4.00)
- Laksa ($19.95) – spicy coconut curry soup with in house GSM noodles paired with vermicelli, tofu puffs, shrimp, fish balls, fish cakes, boiled egg and garnish with fresh herbs and bean sprouts.

One of Malaysia’s most iconic noodle dishes, Char Kway Teow is deceptively simple: flat rice noodles stir-fried over blazing heat with egg, Chinese sausage, chives, and bean sprouts, all coated in dark soy sauce. But here, they do it justice. The wok hei (that elusive charred aroma) is unmistakable. The sausage is sweet and salty, the noodles chewy and savoury. The shrimp add a nice touch and the housemade fish cakes were very unique.

The Laksa here is packed with flavour. A rich, spicy coconut curry broth, fragrant with lemongrass and chili, is poured over a hearty mix of house-made GSM noodles and vermicelli. The noodles, made fresh in-house, have just the right bounce and chew. They’re slightly thicker than your typical wheat noodles, with a silky texture that clings beautifully to the broth. The toppings are a bit sparse, but you can add chicken to make it a more hearty dish.
Golden Smell Mee Menu – Mains
For our mains we went with:
- Sambal Fried Rice ($19.95) – fragrant jasmine rice stir fried with spicy sambal chili paste, galric and shallots. Topped with a fried egg ($2.95)
- Hainanese Chicken Rice with side soup ($22.95 for Large) – poached chicken with fragrant rice, chili sauce, ginger paste and dark soy sauce.

Spicy, smoky, and addictively good, the Sambal Fried Rice is one of the best rice dishes I’ve had in the city. The sambal adds slow-building heat and complexity, with garlic, shallots, and jasmine rice all tossed together in a fiery mix.

Top it with a runny fried egg (do it), break the yolk, and mix it through. Every bite becomes a rich, silky mouthful of chili-laced comfort.

Golden Smell Mee’s take on Hainanese Chicken Rice is everything it should be: subtle, clean, and full of flavour. The poached chicken is tender and smooth, served witha side of fragrant rice. The side chili sauce and ginger scallion sauces are perfect and every bite just works.
Worth a Try?

Absolutely. Golden Smell Mee is one of the best new places to eat in Vancouver’s Chinatown. Not just for the food, but for the story behind it. With deep family roots and serious culinary chops, it brings something new and needed to the area: bold Malaysian-Singaporean flavours, done right. Golden Smell Mee impressed me on every single dish I ordered and I will definitely be back.
