If you’re looking for Japanese food in Toronto, Hello Nori King West deserves a spot on your list. Originally from Vancouver, Hello Nori is known for its fresh hand rolls, premium seafood and signature crispy nori.
Located in the heart of King West, this Japanese hand roll bar offers a fresh take on sushi dining. Think hand rolls made to order, warm sushi rice and front-row seats to watch the chefs in action. While Hello Nori is best known for its hand rolls, I was excited to try Head Chef Sho’s Feature Set Menu ($55). This six-course experience features everything from premium aburi oshi sushi to specialty hand rolls. It’s a great way to sample a variety of Japanese flavours beyond your usual sushi order. I’m a huge fan of the set menus they have at Hello Nori in Vancouver so I had to give the one in Toronto a try.

Japanese Hand Rolls in Toronto: What Makes Hello Nori Different?
Unlike traditional maki rolls, which are typically sliced into several pieces, hand rolls (also known as temaki) are made to be enjoyed immediately. The combination of warm sushi rice, fresh seafood and crisp nori is what makes them so satisfying.
At Hello Nori King West, the counter-style seating adds to the experience. You can watch the chefs prepare each roll before it’s served, making it feel a little more interactive than your usual sushi dinner. The restaurant itself has a sleek, modern Japanese-inspired interior, making it a great spot for a casual date night, solo sushi outing or dinner with a friend in downtown Toronto.
Head Chef Sho’s Feature Set Menu ($55): A Six-Course Japanese Dining Experience
If you’re someone who can never decide what to order at a Japanese restaurant, a set menu is always a good idea.
Head Chef Sho’s Feature Set Menu brings together six courses showcasing different seafood, textures and flavours. Instead of sticking to just hand rolls, you’ll also get to try sashimi, premium aburi oshi sushi and dessert. Here’s what’s included in the $55 experience.
Course 1: Appetizer Trio – Sashimi, Kale Goma-ae & Unagi

The meal begins with three Japanese-inspired appetizers: sashimi, kale goma-ae and unagi with kimizu sauce.
The sashimi keeps things simple with a selection of scallop, salmon and tuna. The kale goma-ae brings a nutty, savoury contrast with its sesame dressing to the trio. The unagi (freshwater eel) is paired with kimizu, a Japanese egg-yolk-based vinegar sauce that adds a creamy, tangy element. It’s a lovely way to start the meal, with three different preparations that introduce the flavours and textures to come.
Course 2: Premium Aburi Oshi Trio – Wagyu, Bafun Uni & Botan Ebi

This might be one of the most exciting courses on the menu, especially if you love premium Japanese ingredients.
For those unfamiliar, aburi refers to a flame-searing technique, while oshi sushi is pressed sushi. The combination brings a different texture and flavour compared to traditional nigiri or maki.
The trio features:
- Wagyu: Known for its rich marbling and buttery texture.
- Bafun Uni: A prized variety of Japanese sea urchin known for its creamy texture and delicate ocean flavour.
- Botan Ebi: Sweet shrimp prized for its naturally sweet, delicate flavour.

It’s not every day you see wagyu, bafun uni and botan ebi featured together in a sushi tasting menu at this price point. Every bite was perfectly balanced. My personal favourite was the botan ebi and the bafun uni pieces.
Course 3: Torotaku Hand Roll – Bluefin Tuna & Pickled Daikon

If you love tuna sushi, you’ll probably appreciate this one.
Torotaku is a classic Japanese combination of fatty tuna and pickled daikon radish, also known as takuan. The richness of the bluefin tuna is balanced by the slightly sweet, tangy crunch of the pickled daikon. Wrap that all up in Hello Nori’s signature crispy seaweed and you’ve got the perfect roll. It’s a simple pairing, but one that really highlights how contrasting textures can make a hand roll so enjoyable.
Course 4: Aburi Madai Hand Roll – Seabream, Oroshi Ponzu & Crispy Fried Onion

Next is the aburi madai hand roll, featuring lightly seared sea bream with oroshi ponzu and crunchy fried onion.
Madai, or Japanese sea bream, has a delicate flavour that works especially well with bright, citrus-forward accompaniments. The oroshi ponzu, a combination of grated daikon and citrusy ponzu sauce, adds freshness, while the crispy fried onion brings an extra layer of texture.
Course 5 – Truffle Lobster Hand Roll

Of course, a visit to Hello Nori wouldn’t feel complete without trying its signature Truffle Lobster Hand Roll.
Lobster and truffle are already a pretty luxurious combination, and wrapping them together with warm sushi rice and crispy nori makes for a particularly indulgent bite. This is also one of the hand rolls featured on Hello Nori’s regular menu, so even if you aren’t ordering the chef’s feature set, it’s worth keeping an eye out for.
Course 6 – Mille Crêpe with Matcha Powder

To finish, the meal ends with a mille crêpe dessert dusted with matcha powder.
The matcha adds a subtle earthy bitterness that complements the sweetness of the cake, making it a fitting finish to a seafood-focused Japanese meal. The dessert overall isn’t too sweet, and it’s a nice delicate ending to a decadent set menu.
Is Hello Nori King West Worth Visiting?
If you’re searching for Japanese food in King West, Hello Nori is a great option to consider, especially if you’re a fan of fresh seafood and Japanese hand rolls.
What makes Head Chef Sho’s $55 Feature Set Menu particularly interesting is the variety. You’re not just getting a selection of hand rolls, but also sashimi, aburi oshi sushi featuring premium ingredients like wagyu and uni, and a dessert to finish.
For $55, it’s an appealing way to explore several different Japanese preparations without having to order everything individually.
It’s also a nice option for anyone who enjoys the idea of an omakase-style dining experience but wants something a little more casual and approachable.
Whether you’re planning a date night in King West, exploring Toronto’s Japanese food scene or simply looking for some delicious hand rolls in Toronto, Hello Nori is worth adding to your restaurant list.
