Hwaro – Korean Steak House & Raw Bar

Hwaro Korean Steak House & Raw Bar is a relatively new Korean restaurant in Coquitlam offering contemporary Korean cuisine. They serve traditional favourites and BBQ as well as offering innovative culinary twists to classic Korean dishes.

A great way to try out a selection of their fusion dishes is to come at lunch for their set menu! They offer two different options, and both are under $20.

On my visit, I went at dinner time and I tried two mains and an appetizer.

Spicy ‘K.F.C.’ Korean Fire Chicken Wings – D’artagnan Organic Chicken, garlic, scallion and special house spicy sauce ($10.00 for half dozen)

These are some of the best chicken wings I’ve ever had! They were perfectly fried – crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The sauce really complimented the wing perfectly. It starts sweet but lingers on the tongue with a spicy kick.

Braised Bone In Beef Short Rib with Butternut Squash Puree – Braised black Angus Short rib, butternut squash puree, calvados soy reduction, fingerling potato, carrot, pearl onion, rice cake and scallion ($19.00 for one person)

This was an interesting take on a Korean classic. The beef ribs were perfectly tender, and the plating was very modern. I don’t think the puree added much to the dish, but it was pleasantly sweet. The rice cake was cooked well, and was a good filler to go with the beef.

Carbonara Tteokbokki & Oden – Creamy rice cake, bacon, broccoli, sous vide poached egg and parmesan cheese ($12.00)

This was the most interesting and fusion dish that we tried. The carbonara sauce was creamy without overwhelming the perfectly cooked rice cakes. The yolk from the egg added to the richness of the dish, and overall this dish was a definite stand out for me!

Would I come back? Yes, I was really impressed with the dishes I tried and I would love to try their set lunch menus!
