Atlas Steak + Fish – Modern Take On A Classic Steakhouse

Atlas Steak + Fish recently launched their new summer menu for the season, and I had the opportunity to try these new dishes as well as their iconic menu staples earlier this month.

Complimentary Bread with Blue Cheese Butter

As a self proclaimed connoisseur of bread, this review would be incomplete if I didn’t mention the amazing bread and butter at Atlas. The bread is served warm and is the perfect vehicle for the creamy and pungent blue cheese butter. It was a struggle not to eat the entire pan!

Brûlée Goat Cheese Bruschetta – fresh tomato, caramelized garlic, balsamic vinegar pearls, basil aioli, toasted filone crostini ($13.00)

The presentation of this dish is gorgeous. This was essentially a deconstructed Bruschetta, and it was delicious. I am a huge fan of goat cheese, and I loved the gamy notes in the cheese. The slight sugar crust on top was a great addition.

Oysters Rockefeller – fresh spinach, reggiano-parmesan, buttered crumb, bearnaise ($18.00)

I love oysters and this preparation was luxurious and rich. The bearnaise sauce was smooth and velvety in texture and went wonderfully with the fresh oysters.

Linguini Vongole – fresh manila clams, white wine, herbs, butter toasted bread crumbs ($26.00)

The pasta was evenly coated and the clams were fresh. It was a large portion, and can definitely be eaten as an entree. The bread crumbs added a nice textural contrast to the soft clams and pasta.

Bay Area Cioppino – dungeness crab legs, black tiger prawn, mussels, clams, salmon, white fish, San Marzano tomato and fennel broth ($30.00)

The Cioppino had an abundance of fresh and delicious seafood. The tomato and fennel broth was fragrant and didn’t overwhelm the delicate seafood. The stand out for me was the black tiger prawns as they were large and succulent.

Tomahawk Steak – 48 oz bone-in Certified Angus Beef tomahawk steak, aged minimum 40 days, grilled in a mesquite-fired Josper oven served with Madagascar green peppercorn sauce ($130.00)

The star of the night was definitely the Tomahawk steak. I prefer my steak on the rare side and unfortunately the one that was served to my table was on the more well done side. As a result the meat was on the tougher side.

However, I loved the peppercorn sauce and it was a real show when it was prepared table side.

The asparagus was seasonal and fresh and went well with the cream sauce. The char from the grill added a nice smokey flavour.

The mushrooms were roasted well and there was an abundance of varieties. I really enjoyed the different textures of the mushrooms and they went really well with the Tomahawk.

Crispy Confit Duck Leg with Seared Foie Gras – Brome Lake duck, white bean, chorizo sausage, spring vegetable ($34.00)

The duck was moist, and the foie gras just added a decadent note to the whole dish. It was seared perfectly and it went well with the soft beans. The beans have been completely saturated in sauce and are little nuggets of flavour.

Baked Alaska – raspberry coconut ice cream, lemon sorbet, orange vanilla cake, italian meringue ($18.00)

No meal is ever complete at Atlas without indulging in their Baked Alaska. It’s flambeed table side so it is as entertaining as it is delicious. The meringue on the outside was light and the lemon sorbet was tangy and fresh.

Overall I really enjoyed my meal at Atlas. The service was on point as usual and the dishes for the most part were executed well. The Brûlée Goat Cheese Bruschetta, the Oysters Rockefeller and the Bay Area Ciopinno were the three stand out menu items for me. The only disappointment of the night was the Tomahawk steak and that was just my own preference for steak preparation.
