Brokenrice – Contemporary Vietnamese Food in Burnaby

Brokenrice Vietnamese Restaurant located in Burnaby Heights serves up contemporary Vietnamese cuisine. They take classic dishes and transform it with modern cooking techniques while incorporating local and sustainable ingredients.

It’s been a staple in the neighbourhood and I revisited last month to see if it was as good as I remember from years ago.

Coconut Shrimp Cakescrispy with soft coconut & rice flour filling, topped with minced shrimp, pork, & green onion served with Nước mắm sauce ($9.50)

I first tried these amazing cakes at Do Chay, and I’ve been on the search for something similar. This is only available during lunch, but they were kind enough to make it for me during dinner.

This rendition wasn’t as light as the ones I had at Do Chay, but they were still quite delicious. There was an ample amount of ground pork on these cakes and the flavour went well with the light coconut cake.

Spring Rolls – Minced pork, carrot, taro root, mushroom, and onion hand-wrapped in rice paper and fried served with nước mắm sauce ($8.50)

These spring rolls were extremely crisp and the rice paper exterior shattered in my mouth. The spring roll had a generous amount of filling and were served piping hot.

Fried Chicken Wings – Tamarind fish sauce ($8.95)

The chicken wings were served hot and crispy, but was lacking flavour. The Tamarind fish sauce was one note in taste.

Can Tho Satay Noodles  Beef and rice noodle in a homemade satay soup with peanuts, coconut, lemongrass, and sesame ($11.95)

This is my go to noodle dish at any Vietnamese restaurant and this rendition did not disappoint. It was a hefty bowl of noodles – packed full of ingredients. The satay soup base was thick and full of peanut flavour with a slight heat. The beef was soft and tender.

Beef Stew Noodles – Slow simmered beef noodle stew with carrots, onions, and cilantro ($11.95)

My friend ordered the beef noodle stew and she had no complaints. I had a taste and the noodle stew had a lovely beef flavour. The vegetables were soft and had soaked in a lot of the beef flavour.

Overall I really enjoyed my dinner at Brokenrice. The service was extremely friendly even though there was only two servers running an entire packed restaurant. I can’t wait to come back to try some of their other signature dishes!
