Perchance Coffee and Tea is the cafe that I wish I had when I was a student in university. The cafe has a very calm atmosphere and each section is it’s own little vibe. Like their namesake, the cafe hopes to create opportunities for people to meet, even if by accident. Perchance is a hidden cafe gem on Dunbar that is just waiting for you to discover it.
The cafe has a wide range of tea and coffee beverages with the focus being on tea. They source their tea straight from China, and they serve extremely high quality tea leaves. I stopped by on a weekend with some friends to try out some of their drinks as well as their small but well executed food menu.
Drinks
The Strawberry Matcha Latte ($8.00) features organic milk, whisked Shizuoka matcha, and fresh strawberry puree. This drink is beautiful with very distinct layers. The matcha flavour is very strong and the sweet strawberry compliments the bitterness of the matcha. It is quite similar to the drink from Boba Guys in San Francisco. There is nothing more disappointing than getting a latte with weak latte art. That won’t be a problem here! All of our lattes and cortados had gorgeous art. My hot Matcha Latte ($5.00) with soy had a deep rich matcha flavor.
Light Lunch Options
Avocado Toast with Smoked Salmon ($13.00) features a fresh sunflower flax sourdough topped with smashed avocado, arugula, pickled red onions and an organic free-range egg. The bread was hearty and soft and went well with all the ingredients. It would be perfect for breakfast or a light lunch.
The Avocado Butter Croissant with Smoked Salmon ($13.00) features smashed avocado, arugula, pickled red onions and a poached organic free-range egg. The croissant is flaky and buttery and has a generous amount of avocado and smoked salmon. The Grilled Cheese ($8.00) is lightly grilled making the cheese super melty and gooey. I loved the addition of the egg – adding to the overall richness of the sandwich.
Overall I really enjoyed my experience at this cafe. The employees are passionate about their jobs and very friendly. All the food and drinks are made with care and precision. The beautiful interiors and friendly atmosphere make Perchance a great place for an meeting friends, a date or studying. It joins the ranks of one of my favourite cafes!
