Basak Cafe – Serving Up Korean Waffles in Burquitlam

Basak Cafe is the trendiest new cafe on North Road. They recently opened last month and their specialty is Korean street waffles. These waffles are made fresh and filled with fresh cream and various toppings. Basak Cafe has a small menu with a small variety of Korean waffles, shaved ice and drinks.

This small cafe is run by a husband and wife duo. The husband works the kitchen and the wife runs the front of house. They are super friendly and very passionate about their waffles!

I saw quite a number of posts on Instagram of their ‘half and half’ waffle as well as their Dalgona Latte and I just had to check it out for myself.

This cafe is small and very popular right now, so prepare in advance for a wait. I went on a Sunday afternoon and thankfully was able to snag a seat right away. One half of their cafe has a bright and welcoming yellow with a gorgeous neon sign that can’t be missed.

Chubby Waffle – Crispy Waffles with Fresh Cream

First up we had the Strawberry Chubby Waffle ($8.00). This crispy waffle was full of fresh cream with a light strawberry flavour and a few slices of strawberry decoration. The filling wasn’t too sweet, however it is quite a soft peak whip so it will melt quickly. It was quite messy to eat, but still very delicious!

We also had the Green Tea and Red Bean Chubby Waffle ($8.00). This one was full of a matcha cream and a house made red bean paste. Unlike the ones you get from a can, this paste wasn’t too sweet and there was lots of chunks of red bean. I felt that the waffle was lacking in matcha taste, and you can tell from the light green colour. Overall, I would pick the Strawberry one. If you want to try both, I recommend getting the Half and Half ($9.00) which is the above flavours (one on each side).

Dalgona Latte

Their Ice Dalgona ($5.50) is an absolute treat. It has a very strong coffee flavour and the Dalgona topping (sponge toffee) makes for a stunning drink. Make sure you snag a piece or two to eat before it melts into the drink!

Due to the size of the cafe, it isn’t the best place to catch up with friends as it can get quite loud inside. The staff do their best to sanitize the tables between customers and there are dividers between tables. I didn’t get the chance to try their shaved ice this time, but I’ve read good things, so I’ll definitely be back to check it out!
