Big Way Hot Pot is bringing a new way of hot pot to the Lower Mainland. They offer a fast-casual individual hot pot experience where customers can select from approximately 100 items to curate their own hot pots. The concept is simple. From their display cases you can select the ingredients of your choice, and then you pick you soup base (8 different soups), and then the kitchen will cook up your pot fresh for you. In addition to their hot pot, they also has a fairly large bubble tea selection to choose from (including alcoholic options!). Check out my full review below!
Big Way Hot Pot – Pricing, Ingredients and Soup Bases
You are charged by weight at $3.99 per 100g. So your hot pot is as expensive or as affordable as you make it. Do note, that the pots to carry your ingredients are quite big, so it can be easy to over fill your pot. The trick is to really think about what you can eat, and then pick from there. Don’t let your eyes be bigger than your stomach! However, if you do order too much you can always take it to go and make a second meal at home later.
There are currently 8 soup bases to choose from – Signature Ma La Tang, Sichuan Green Pepper Soup, Tom Yum Soup, Collagen Bone Broth, Sha Cha Soup, Tomato Soup, Ma La Ban Dry Mix, and Sesame Paste Dry Mix. The last two are actually dry/stir-fry sauces so if you’re not in a soup mood, these are good alternatives.
There are so many ingredients to choose from – from vegetables, tofu, noodles, meats, fish balls and more. My recommendation is to load up on the vegetables (quite light!) and thinly sliced meats. I personally love fish balls and there were so many options (including mochi filled cheese!) that I had to pick a few. One of the best ways to end a meal is ice cream – and it’s free of charge here. The flavours change monthly and for the month of July the flavour of the month was milk tea.
Big Way Hot Pot – Alcoholic Bubble Tea
There are plenty of bubble tea options to choose from. They make for a nice refreshing beverage to accompany your steaming hot pot. If you’re feeling like a drink, you can also order spiked bubble tea! We tried their Spiked Grape Sparkling with On The Rocks and Spiked Fresh Milk Tea with Baileys.
Worth a Try?
Yes! It was such a fun and unique concept that we don’t see a lot here. The closest alternative is Grandma Liu Hot Pot. This spot has so many fresh ingredients to choose from. Another differentiating factor is definitely the service. Everyone is so nice and friendly, and from the moment you arrive you are taken care of. The staff always ask if you need assistance and are happy to offer suggestions. I definitely recommend you check this spot out. Pro tip – on weekdays until 5 pm you can get a free Jasmine green tea with your hot pot!
