Kamei on Broadway is a long standing Japanese restaurant in Vancouver serving up delicious Japanese cuisine with a twist. From January 17th to February 4th they will be serving up a $48 4-course menu. I came by earlier this week to try out this menu and I was impressed with the generous portions and tasty flavours. Check out my full review of Kamei on Broadway’s $48 special menu below.
Kamei on Broadway – $48 Special Four Course Menu (Starters)
To start everyone gets a Tofu Miso Soup. For appetizer there is a choice of:
- Aburi Salmon Inferno (4 pieces)
- Sashimi Plate
- Kaarage Taster
The Aburi Salmon Inferno features torched Atlantic salmon with motoyaki sauce, Japanese caviar, green onion on prawn tempura, shiso, kanpyo and sesame. This was really flavourful and I like the char on the fish. This was our favourite of the three appetizers.
The Sashimi Plate features one piece salmon, tuna, yellowtail and hokkigai. The sashimi was fresh, so no complaints there.
The Kaarage Taster features chikuwa cheese, chicken karaage and a vegetable croquette. The items were well fried and crisp. The chikuwa cheese was the most unique with the fish cake filled with stretchy cheese. Overall if you are a fan of fried food this is the appetizer for you.
Kamei on Broadway – $48 Special Four Course Menu (Mains)
The mains are were Kamei on Broadway really shines. The portion sizes were very generous and the dishes were well executed. There are three options to choose from:
- Alaskan Sablefish
- Meat Lovers Trio
- Uni Cream Miso Udon
The Alaskan Sablefish comes with rice in a sweet sauce and seasonal vegetables. There are two large pieces of sablefish and they are very moist and tender. The sauce is the perfect amount of sweetness and goes well with the rice.
The Meat Lovers Trio features beef short ribs, chicken teriyaki and pork belly chashu in a hot stone bowl with rice. The rice gets super crispy in the stone bowl – which I love. The dish comes with a sweet and sticky garlicky sauce that complements the meats really well.
The highlight and best dish of the night for me was definitely the Uni Cream Miso Udon. This dish features Japanese Sanuki udon, uni, ikura and grilled Black Tiger Prawns.
The udon was perfect – bouncy and chewy. The sauce was lush and creamy with a mild uni flavour. The prawns were large and tender and the pops of ikura really balance out the overall richness of the dish. If you love seafood, this is a must order!
Kamei on Broadway – $48 Special Four Course Menu (Dessert)
The dessert options on this menu are:
- Oreo Cheesecake
- Mochi Ice
The Oreo Cheesecake is pretty standard. It was thick, rich and creamy with lots of oreo flavour. It’s a pretty sweet dessert though, so you may want to pick the other dessert option if you want a more refreshing end to your meal.
The Mochi Ice features soft mochi on shaved ice with red bean and fresh fruits. On my visit they were having technically difficulties so this dessert was lackluster for me. It was essentially ice in a sugar syrup with mochi, red bean and frozen blueberries. I have since seen other peoples’ photos and it looks a lot better so I think it was just an off night for them for this particular dessert. The fresh mochi was excellent though – great chew!
Worth a Try?
Yes! Overall we had a great experience. For $48 you get a great variety of foods with great portion sizes. I was particularly impressed with the mains from my meal. All three of them were excellent and really delicious. Kamei on Broadway has been a go-to for my family for years, I still remember when they did All You Can Eat and a robata grill! It was nice to take a trip down memory lane with my family and experience this menu.
