You can’t miss Toyokan Bowl. With its sloped roof, warm wooden panels, and the nostalgic charm of an old Japanese home, the exterior looks like it was plucked right out of Kyoto and dropped onto West 1st. But step inside and you’re in for a surprise: this isn’t your typical Japanese spot. The entire concept, from the decor to the menu, is bowling-themed. I came for two heavy hitters: the Strike Bowl, loaded with briny ikura and creamy bafun uni, and the Bluefin Feast Bowl, basically a greatest hits of tuna—toro, chutoro, akami, and a delicate tuna tartare all layered over perfect rice. If you’re chasing next-level sashimi bowls that feel straight out of Tokyo but with a bit of Vancouver quirk, Toyokan Bowl is exactly where you want to be. Check out my full review of Toyokan below!

Toyokan Bowl – Epic Japanese Donburi Menu
I have been wanting to try Toyokan Bowl for awhile, so I definitely went all out on my visit. I got:
- Strike Bowl ($60.00)
- Bluefin Feast Bowl ($65.00)

The Strike Bowl is a curated showcase of briny ikura and creamy bafun uni. Each spoonful feels indulgent yet pure. The flavours are super clean and the rice is perfectly cooked.

That bafun uni, sourced for its sweetness and rich texture, really steals the show. It’s the sweetest uni I have ever had and each bite pairs so well with the salty burst of ocean flavour of the ikura.

Next came the Bluefin Feast Bowl – a tuna tour de force. Fatty bluefin, toro, chutoro, akami and tuna tartare: it’s the seafood equivalent of a luxe tasting flight. The toro practically melts, the chutoro offers balanced richness, akami provides the clean tuna punch, and the tartare adds texture and seasoning.

The colours of this bowl are stunning. The tuna is fresh and flavourful and my favourite was the chutoro for it’s rich fattiness without being too overwhelming.
