If you’re searching for authentic Vietnamese food in Burnaby or Vancouver, look no further than Chen Vietnamese Restaurant. This spot is a hidden gem tucked into the vibrant neighbourhood of North Burnaby in Burnaby Heights. This newly opened eatery is quickly gaining attention for its bold flavours, traditional recipes, and standout presentation that stays true to the heart of Northern Vietnamese cuisine. They have only been open for a short time but there are already lines for tables. With an extensive menu that balances street-food favourites and hearty family-style dishes, it’s the perfect destination for both casual lunches and flavour-packed dinners. On my visit, I had the chance to try two signature dishes that showcase Chen’s commitment to authenticity and freshness. Based on these two dishes, I can’t wait to be back. On my visit I got:

  • Grilled Lemongrass Chicken & Pork on Rice (Cơm Gà, Thịt Nướng) ($20.25)
  • Vermicelli Noodles & Fermented Shrimp Paste Platter (Bún Đậu Mắm Tôm) ($28.05)

A staple in Vietnamese cuisine, Cơm Gà, Thịt Nướng is a comforting dish that pairs aromatic grilled meats with fluffy rice. At Chen, the grilled lemongrass chicken is juicy and fragrant, while the pork slices are caramelized to perfection. Each bite is full of umami with a hint of smokiness. Served with fresh greens and pickled vegetables for balance, this plate is both hearty and refreshing. There is also a small bowl of hot steaming soup. It’s exactly what you’d hope for when craving authentic Vietnamese grilled meats in Burnaby.

If you’re a fan of bold, regional Vietnamese dishes, this one is a must. Bún Đậu Mắm Tôm is a Northern Vietnamese classic that’s rarely found in typical pho-centric restaurants across Vancouver. Chen’s version is a generous platter of: steamed pork hock slices, golden deep-fried tofu, crispy deep-fried young rice cake, vermicelli noodles and fresh herbs.

This is all paired with a rich, fermented shrimp paste dipping sauce. Chen does it different here, because their shrimp paste is imported directly from Vietnam – none of the jarred stuff here!

It’s a dish that I love and I’m so happy to find it here. I love the all the different textures and flavours – salty, funky, crunchy, tender, yet all beautifully balanced. For those searching for authentic Northern Vietnamese food in Vancouver, this is your spot.

I didn’t get to try it on this visit, but I really want to order the Bún Nem (Hanoi-Style Vermicelli Noodle With Crisp Crab Parcel) next time I go. The photos online look so lush and the parcels look very crisp and filled with crab. It was a popular order for the tables around me.

Worth a Try?

Yes! Whether you’re a Vietnamese food enthusiast or just looking to explore new and authentic flavours, Chen Vietnamese Restaurant in North Burnaby should be on your radar. It’s an exciting new addition to the Lower Mainland’s Vietnamese dining scene, offering genuine dishes that are both comforting and adventurous. I can’t wait to be back!
