Spot prawn season is finally upon us again in Vancouver! It’s been an absolute crazy rush this weekend of people buying up spot prawns. I was one of those people who were crazy enough to queue for my yearly indulgence of spot prawns. My family prefers boiled spot prawns paired with my mum’s super secret special sauce (Green Onion Oil).

Spot prawns can be bought directly from the fishermen at Steveston Fisherman’s Wharf (usually $18-20 per pound pound), T&T Supermarket ($16.88 per pound), Fresh Ideas Start Here ($20 per pound) or various local seafood shops. I was lucky and was able to purchase 3 lbs of spot prawns from H-Mart for only $14.98 per pound! The spot prawns in Vancouver this year are absolutely mammoth in size this year!

We wash the prawns before putting them into a large pot of boiling water. We boil the prawns for 8-10 minutes until cooked. Drain and serve, it really is that easy!

While spot prawns are delicious on their own naturally, this sauce really makes it for me. The key ingredient is to use Lee Kum Kee Seasoned Soy Sauce for Seafood. It’s the perfect accompaniment to the natural sweetness of the spot prawns. I peel my prawns (saving the shells and heads of course to make stock) and place it on top of some rice before dousing it in green onion oil. An indulgent dinner that will have you licking your fingers. For a complete meal, serve with a refreshing cucumber salad to cleanse your palate.

Spot prawn season is extremely brief, so if it’s something you want to eat it’s best to try and get your hands on some within the next week or so. Most local fishermen and seafood shops will allow you to preorder, so if you don’t mind spending an extra couple dollars to skip the queue, this is the way to go!

Ingredients
  

  • 3 cups chopped green onion
  • 1/2 cup vegetable or canola oil
  • 1/3 cup Lee Kum Kee Seasoned Soy Sauce For Seafood
  • 1 Thai red chili pepper

Instructions
 

  • Dice up your green onions (stems and all).
  • In a pan heat up your oil. Add your green onion and cook them until they are soft.
  • Remove from the heat and stir in soy sauce.
  • Add a finely diced chili (adjust for spiciness for your taste). Serve with freshly boiled spot prawns!
