Tendon Kohaku is the best restaurant for tempura bowls in Vancouver. Tendon Kohaku is a Singapore-based chain that focuses on Japanese tempura dishes. They are cooking up Japanese style tempura rice bowls with the best Japanese rice, signature sauces and the freshest ingredients. They recently introduced Tempura Udon bowls to their menu as a seasonal special. Check out what I thought about the new Tendon Kohaku Tempura Udon Bowls below!
Tendon Kohaku – Seasonal Special Tempura Udon Bowls
There are two new seasonal special menu items at Tendon Kohaku:
- Kohaku Udon ($17.45) – Udon, 2 prawns, 1 chicken, 1 squid, 1 baby corn, 2 fresh beans, 1 shitake mushroom, 1 kabocha and a soft fried egg
- Anago Udon ($21.45) – Udon, 1 anago (eel), 2 prawns, 1 chicken, 2 fresh beans, 1 shitake mushroom, 1 lotus root and a soft fried egg
The bowls are served with soup on the side and you are supposed to place the tempura into the side bowl, pour the soup into the udon and then enjoy! The sauce is also in a separate container and you can drizzle to your desire. However, if you’re ordering a rice bowl you will need to request for the sauce to be on the side.
The udon was nice and bouncy and I enjoyed the soup with the tempura. The tempura was fresh and crispy and this was the perfect comfort dish. The egg was perfectly fried and added a lovely richness to the dish. My favourite tempura from the bowls were the anago, lotus root, baby corn and prawns, however they are all delectable. I think it really comes down to personal preference if you are a noodle person or a rice person.
The tempura is always the crowning glory, but the experiences of eating the tempura with soup and udon versus with just rice is so different! Personally I am team udon, however most of my family is firmly in the rice ship. And let me tell you Tendon Kohaku rice is just spot on! Before they had the udon bowls, my go to order is the Sashimi Aimori Tendon. This bowl consists of prawns, chicken, kabocha, french beans, kaisen sauce, tuna, salmon, scallop, ikura, green onion, cucumber and wasabi.
Worth a Try?
Absolutely! If you’re a tempura fan this seasonal special is a must try. The udon is fresh and bouncy and goes so well with the tempura!
