Nam Dae Moon Burnaby – Fresh Rice Cake Desserts

Nam Dae Moon Rice Cake has a new location in Burnaby! This is the international chain’s second BC location. Nam Dae Moon is a bakery specializing in traditional steamed Korean rice cakes known as tteok.  These healthy, chewy Korean rice cakes are low in sugar and great for Asian palates. For freshness and quality, everything is made in-house throughout the day. This ensures the rice cake texture is up to the top standards of traditional Korean rice cakes. In addition to traditional Korean style rice cakes they also carry a variety of mochi (Japanese rice cakes). I came by over the weekend to try their new Mochi Cake Taco as well as some of their classic treats.

Nam Dae Moon Burnaby – Mochi Cake Taco

I love that Nam Dae Moon is always introducing new rice cake desserts. Their latest creation is Mochi Cake Taco. There are four flavours: Chestnut, Chocolate, Matcha and Vanilla. Unfortunately on my visit the only available flavour was Chocolate.

The Chocolate Mochi Cake Taco ($12.95) features a light chocolate cake with chocolate cream and a mochi in the center. I really like this dessert! The cake isn’t too sweet, and the softness of the cakes goes very well with the chewiness of the mochi. I would definitely come back to try the chestnut one.

Nam Dae Moon Burnaby – Rice Cake

The rice cake at Nam Dae Moon has a crumblier texture than traditional Japanese rice cakes. The flavour is very mild, so I appreciate all the different flavours that Nam Dae Moon has come up with. On this visit I had three flavours:

  • Red Bean Glutinous Rice Cake
  • Oreo Chocolate Lava Rice Cake
  • Caramel Lotus Rice Cake

While the first is quite traditional, the other two are definitely a much more modern interpretation of rice cake. However, I find all of them very enjoyable!

The Red Bean Glutinous Rice Cake ($6.99) features smashed adzuki (red) beans, brown sugar and decadent sweet potato puree. It is a classic at Nam Dae Moon and for good reason! This is a personal favourite of mine as I am a huge fan of all these flavours (particularly sweet potato) and they all work so well together.

The Oreo Chocolate Lava Rice Cake ($9.99) features Oreo cookies with a chocolate lava middle. The rich chocolate flavour pairs nicely with the mild rice cakes.

The Caramel Lotus Rice Cake ($9.99) features Lotus Biscoff, a delicate Belgian buttery cookie, touched with cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, allspice, and cloves, and completed with a deep caramel flavour. The warm rice cake is also freshly handmade with Lotus cookie crumbs. This is the perfect example of mixing traditional with modern. The caramel flavour is rich and deep. Combine it with the chew of the fresh rice cake it’s just unbeatable!

Nam Dae Moon Burnaby – Mochi

Nam Dae Moon has plenty of mochi flavours to choose from. They range from traditional flavours like mango and red bean to more modern flavours like salted Oreo cream with Ferrero Rocher and Milky Banana. They also have savoury flavours like Salty Egg Yolk & Dried Meat Floss and Taro & Dreid Meat Floss! On this visit I had:

  • Strawberry Mochi
  • Purple Sweet Potato & Sweet Red Bean Mochi
  • Salty Egg Yolk & Dried Meat Floss Sweet Green Mochi

The Strawberry Mochi ($5.49) has lots of fresh cream and fresh strawberries. The mochi skin is very thin and overall this was a very well made mochi!

The Purple Sweet Potato & Sweet Red Bean Mochi ($4.49) was another favourite. The purple sweet potato flavour was very prominent and the red beans added a nice texture contrast to the mochi.

The Salty Egg Yolk & Dried Meat Floss Sweet Green Mochi ($6.49) is definitely the most unique mochi I have tried from here. The salty egg yolk was very strong but not in a bad way. If you’re a fan of salty egg yolk you need to give this mochi a try. The contrast between salty and sweet was very unique and delicious!

Worth a Try?

Yes! I’m so glad that there is a new location closer to me for me to get my rice cake fix! Nam Dae Moon Burnaby is only a two minute walk from the Royal Oak Skytrain station. It is transit and car friendly (plenty of street parking available). Their rice cakes are so fresh and delicious and absolutely worth a try.
