On a day of exploring Richmond, I went to several hit spots that are making waves on Chinese social media. In addition to going to Rice Holic for lunch, we went across the street to Car’s Dessert. They are known for their famous baked puddings and mochi. Unfortunately for us, they were completely sold out of their baked puddings by early afternoon and technically they were also out of mochi. However, they were taking mochi preorders for a later pick up time that afternoon. For the preorder there is a minimum of order of 4. Additionally, there are in predetermined flavour combinations and the menu is only in Chinese. Check out my mini review of Car’s Dessert mochi below.
Car’s Dessert – Fresh Mochi in Pacific Plaza in Richmond
For our preorder we went with an assortment of 4 flavours for $10.50. There was Durian, Chestnut, Purple Yam and Mango.
The mochi is definitely fresh because it was so soft. The mochi skin is definitely Chinese style mochi. It is softer, with less chew than Japanese mochi. The fillings were all very fresh and generous in each mochi. My personal favourite was the Mango, because of the large fresh chunks of mango. Overall, the fillings are not too sweet, it is definitely for an Asian palette. The Chestnut one has smooth chestnut puree with chunks of chestnut. The Purple Sweet Potato is very similar to the filling I make for my Purple Sweet Potato buns. I am not a fan of Durian, but my friend is and she LOVES this mochi. She said it was the best she has ever had.
Overall, the mochi was not bad, but not something I would wait for again. I personally enjoy the chewier Japanese mochi style so these fell a bit short for me. The fillings were nice and wholesome but overall I felt they lack flavour. The durian had the strongest smell (obviously) and was apparently the most flavourful, so if you’re a fan of Durian I would recommend you check them out. I will definitely give them another chance for their baked puddings because this little stall was super busy so my curiosity is definitely piqued.
