I don’t generally eat breakfast, but if I do, I always default back to a comforting Hong Kong style breakfast. There’s something so nostalgic about waking up early and eating at a classic cha chaan teng (茶餐廳). When I think HK breakfast I think satay beef, macaroni soup, the ubiquitous off-brand SPAM, thick white toast with omelets, and pineapple buns with butter. With Vancouver’s massive Cantonese population, there are plenty of spots to choose from. However, time and time again I come back to Kam Do Bakery. While it is not a typical sit down restaurant, don’t let that hinder you from trying out this spot. Everything is packaged so well, so you don’t have to worry about the food staying secure or fresh while you find somewhere to eat (I usually eat in the comfort of my car!). Check out my full review of Kam Do Bakery below!
Kam Do Bakery – Breakfast Options
Kam Do Bakery serves breakfast at their location next to CF Richmond Center ONLY. It is from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, however last call is 2:30 PM, so definitely get your orders in before then. Everything is less than $10 which is an absolute steal for the quality and quantity of food.
Ordering is very straightforward. When you first walk in look to your right and you’ll see a stack of order sheets. Fill in the sheet according to what you’d like and then pass off to the lady behind the counter. Note, it is not the payment counter at the front, but the counter on the side of the bakery with a wall of evaporated milk. They will then pass you a buzzer so you know when to pick up your food.
On my visit I went with a 2 noodle combo:
- Luncheon Meat and Sausage with Instant Noodle
- Satay Beef and Pan Fried Egg with Macaroni
This is comfort food at it’s finest. No frills, solid good food. The packaging is great because they separate the noodles and toppings from the soup to ensure that your food stays fresh and not soggy. Everything was cooked right and piping hot. And for $9.25 you really can’t go wrong with such a filling breakfast.
Next up we got their “Kam Do Burger”. You select either the Sandwich option or the Pineapple Bun option for your base. Then you choose a protein: Corned Beef, Luncheon Meat, or Sliced Ham. It’s finished with scrambled egg and cheese. I went with the Sandwich with Sliced Ham and it was heavenly. The bread was perfectly toasted on the outside but still soft on the inside. Pair that with the fluffiest scrambled eggs and you’ll be in heaven!
Kam Do – Vancouver’s Best Pineapple Buns
When you’re at Kam Do you need to get their Pineapple Buns. They are the best in Vancouver and so I had to try all of their special Pineapple Bun offerings:
- Pineapple Bun with Butter ($3.95)
- Satay Beef Pineapple Bun ($5.95)
Can you say you’ve had a HK breakfast if you don’t order a piping hot Pineapple Bun with a thick cold slice of butter in the middle? The soft bun with the crispy sweet topping and the cold thick butter is just an experience you need to try at least once.
If you’re a fan of sweet and salty combinations the Satay Beef Pineapple Bun will be perfect for you. The slightly sweet pineapple bun pairs so well with the salty peanut-y beef filling.
Kam Do Bakery – Freshly Baked Buns and Pastries
If you’re looking for classic Chinese baked buns look no further than Kam Do. Their buns are always enormous, soft and fluffy. They’re also very generous with the fillings so the bun to filling ratio is always spot on. They have all the classics like BBQ Pork Bun, Curry Beef Bun, Cocktail Bun, Chicken Pot Pie, Sausage Bun etc. But they’re also riffing on classics with buns like Deep Fried Sausage Bun, Pork Floss and Seaweed Bun and Pizza Bun.
Also synonymous with Kam Do is ‘lo por beng’ (老婆餅) aka wife pastry. This classic flaky pastry filled with a delicious and chewy sweet wintermelon filling. No bakery does it better than Kam Do Bakery. In addition to this classic they also have a stunning gift box of 12 colourful Chinese pastries with a variety of delicious fillings.
Worth a Try?
ABSOLUTELY. I adore Kam Do Bakery and I have been going since I was a very young child. Anyone remember when they used to have a restaurant with free refills on iced drinks? I always recommend Kam Do for anyone looking for quality Chinese buns and pastries. If you’re in Richmond (and even if you’re not!) the Kam Do breakfast is so yummy and worth it. I would highly recommend you check it out for a great and inexpensive breakfast for under $10 in the Lower Mainland!
