JUNO Provisions – Build Your Own Chirashi Bowls on Commercial Drive

JUNO Provisions is a very small restaurant on Commercial Drive serving up aburi oshi sushi, a small selection of rolls and build your own chirashi bowls. With a 4.7 star rating on Google, I have been meaning to check them out for awhile. Although there is some seating inside, it really is more of a grab and go place. There are three small (and I mean small, it seats one per) tables by the window and some counter seating along the wall. Their pricing is fair, and they have a good deal for an omakase chirashi for $20. They are also constantly running a BOGO promo for their seared oshi sushi on Uber Eats.

There isn’t a whole lot of options to choose from, but the selection is tight and fresh. The best deal for me is definitely the omakase chirashi for $20. While I was there, the chef was doing a steady clip of take out orders for the Oshi sushi so I think that’ll be a good option to try next time.

My friend got the Build Your Own Chirashi Bowl (Regular Size) which comes with 220 g with 3 toppings. She chose jumbo scallop ($8.00), sea urchin ($12.00) and salmon roe ($9.00). So her bowl total was $29.00. Her favourite was the jumbo scallop because it was large and sweet. I would say the portion size is good if you’re a small eater, but it’s more of a snack. We appreciate the fresh cucumber and shiso for the brightness.

I went with the Omakase Chirashi ($20.00) + sea urchin ($12.00) since I can never resist uni. My bowl came with tuna, salmon, scallop, saba and unagi. The base bowl is a good deal as there are two thick fresh cuts of each sashimi (except the scallop). Everything was fresh and tasty. The sea urchin was okay, but for $12 there was just shy of 1.5 pieces so I don’t think it was worth the addition. It also wasn’t the freshest. Again, the portion is not the largest and I was still hungry afterwards, but it’s good for a snack.

Worth a Try?

Overall it was not bad. I wouldn’t make a specific trip out for the bowls here, but it’s a good neighbourhood spot. The prices do start to add up as our two bowls ended up being a $65 snack for us. For that price I could have gotten a sashimi platter from Sashimiya with more selection.
