Kumonocha Cafe is a very popular chain of cafes serving up delicious sweets and drinks made with Uji matcha. There are several locations in Kyoto – Teramachi, Shijo Kawaramachi, Kiyomizu Sannezaka (near Kiyomizudera) and Arashiyama. I went to the location at Arashiyama, and it is a stunning two storey cafe with a beautiful clean and simple aesthetic. It is a fairly popular spot, so definitely expect a queue. You place your order in the front, and then you can pick up your items and proceed to the second floor where there is a pathway of bamboo leading to a bright open space for sitting. Kumonocha Cafe Kyoto – Matcha Cloud Cakes, Matcha Lattes and more!
On my visit in May they had a special set available so of course I had to try! The Kumono Genmaicha Mousse Set is a seasonal flavour and features a Yuzu and Genmaicha mousse cloud cake. The set is 1480 yen and it includes one cloud cake and one drink of choice. I went with their signature matcha latte!
The cake features a delicate yuzu chocolate ‘crust’ exterior and a lightly flavoured mousse. In the center is a yuzu jelly and on the bottom is a light sponge. It’s a nice and light refreshing dessert. I would definitely get this one again. The yuzu flavour pairs so well with the Genmaicha! The matcha latte was strong with a slight bitter taste. The milk was smooth and creamy – a beautiful latte. I love that the drink also comes in a bamboo glass in a nod to the bamboo forests of Arashiyama.
Worth a Try?
Yes! The set was a delicious and tasty treat and the cafe space is stunning. It was so nice to spend an hour on the balcony enjoying my treats and watching the extremely busy shopping street. Kumonocha Cafe is definitely worth a try, and you should definitely put it on your list for your next visit to Kyoto.
