Growing up my favourite sweet treat was a bubble waffle (aka 雞蛋仔). I have such found memories of this delicious egg based waffle from my childhood. The best spot for this classic treat is definitely at Eggette House. You may know them as the shop that uses Dyson hairdryers to cool down their waffles, and let me just say their waffles deserve that luxury! Eggette House has the most authentic egg waffles I have had outside of Hong Kong. In addition to their original flavour they also have a huge variety of sweet and savoury flavours to choose from. This small shop is located on the main floor of the Richmond Public Market and they are always busy. Wait times can sometimes be up to an hour, but honestly they are absolutely worth it. Check out my full review of Eggette House below!
What are Egg Waffles?
Egg Waffles are a spherical egg based waffle that originates from Hong Kong. They are also known as ‘bubble waffle’ or ‘gai daan jai’. This is a very popular Hong Kong street snack. You used to be able to get these everywhere in Hong Kong but in recent years its been harder and harder to find. Egg waffles are made from a sweet, egg rich batter (hence the gorgeous yellow colour) that is cooked in a distinctive hexagon frying pan. Each waffle sphere is crispy on the outside with a fluffy and slightly chewy inside.
Eggette House – Specialty Bubble Waffles and Milk Tea
Eggette House has so many delicious flavours to choose from including:
- Original ($4.99)
- Banana ($5.75)
- Double Chocolate ($6.25)
- Black Sesame ($5.75)
- Oreo ($5.75)
- Seaweed with Pork Fluff ($6.50)
- Salted Egg Yolk with Pork Fluff ($6.75)
- Portuguese Egg Tart ($8.50)
They have a really great ‘Classic Combo’ deal which is one original bubble waffle with their house special milk tea for $7.99. I usually get this combo, but today I was feeling fancy so I went with their signature Portuguese Egg Tart Bubble Waffle, Bacon and Cheese Bubble Waffle, and Charcoal Salted Egg Bubble Waffle. Do note, the Charcoal one is only available at the Richmond Night Market. You cannot get it at their storefront.
The thing I love most about Eggette House is that they do not skimp on the fillings. Each and every ‘bubble’ of the waffle is stuffed with filling. The Portuguese Egg Tart features a crispy exterior with the creamiest, eggy flan interior. The Bacon and Cheese one is great for all the savoury lovers because there’s so much cheesy goodness. The saltiness of the bacon works really well with the sweetness of the egg batter. The Charcoal Salted Egg one features a salted egg yolk cream filling that is so rich and decadent. I think it’s worth going to the Nightmarket for!
The Milk Tea at Eggette House is the closest to authentic HK Milk Tea I can find outside of Vancouver. There’s such a rich and silky smooth taste to the milk tea that other places can’t seem to replicate. Kam Do Bakery does a pretty good version, but they have since stopped their breakfast service. Eggette House uses milk tea ice cubes so that when it melts it doesn’t dilute your drink!
Worth a Try?
Yes! This (not so) hidden gem is a must visit spot in Richmond. There wide variety of bubble waffles will have you coming back time and again to try them all!
