Shanghai food is one of my favourite cuisines in the world. It is one of the only things I will wake up early for. I’m always on the hunt for new Shanghainese places, so it was bittersweet for me when I saw that a Shanghai restaurant had taken over Satomi Sushi on Kingsway. As my friends know, Satomi Sushi was one of my favourite Japanese restaurants in Vancouver, and unfortunately it shut down a couple months ago.
I came to check out this restaurant with my family during their soft opening. They are currently offering 10% off all orders.
They have an extremely limited menu. I’m not sure if they plan on expanding their menu in the future, but I was a little disappointed by the small selection.
We decided to order Lunch Set B and Lunch Set C to try.
They weren’t kidding when they said mini! These wontons were mostly wrapper with a pinky nail portion of filling. I like the addition of seaweed in the soup, and it tasted very ‘clear’. I liked this dish, and I found it comforting on a cold day.
Each order comes with four pieces. These were juicy albeit on the smaller side, but well fried. However, the soup from the bun was a bit sweeter than I prefer. I liked the addition of sesame seeds!
Continuing on the the theme of ‘small’ these buns were the smallest XLB I’ve ever seen! The dumpling wrapper was very thin, but there was no soup leakage. Like the pan fried buns, the soup in these were on the sweeter side, so I wasn’t really a fan.
Not pictured: Taro Tapioca. This was served at the very beginning of the meal (even though it was cold and sweet?), and was not very memorable. It was on the blander side and didn’t really add much to the meal overall.
Would I come back? I really wanted to like this place, because the service was really good, and you can tell they really care, but the food just wasn’t up to par for me. There are a lot of Shanghai restaurants within a block or two of ColourSeeSee (like Dinesty or Shanghai Elan), and they are much better taste and value wise.
Hopefully it’s because they’re in their soft opening phase they are still working out some kinks and will improve in a few months.
