Kun’s Omakase Bar is the new darling of Instagram. This brand new restaurant is serving up fresh and delicious Japanese food at incredibly reasonable prices. Kun’s Omakase Bar is a Japanese restaurant located in Steveston. Although it’s a bit far, it is really worth the drive out. Unfortunately they are not offering omakase at this time, they are open for regular dine in. Reservations are highly recommend as the restaurant is quite small. Check out their full menu here. Trudy and I came by for a treat yourself dinner. We went all out with ordering – three of the dishes that we ordered had uni! We honestly could not have been happier.
Special Meal – Sets, Specials and Dons
First up we had the Signature Zen ($20.00). This set is an absolute steal. For just $20 you get Chef’s choice 5 piece sashimi, 3 pieces nigiri, 3 pieces oshi, gomae and miso soup. On this particular day our set came with 2 piece maguro, 2 piece beni sake (sockeye salmon), amaebi (spot prawn) and hotate (Hokkaido scallop). The scallop was so sweet and delicious. However, the spot prawn was particularly fresh and sweet and definitely my favourite.
The oshi sushi was a sample of their three options – salmon, ebi and saba. As the chef has previously been at Miku, these oshi are carbon copies of what you can get at Miku. Full size portions is at a similar price point at $16 per roll.
The Uni and Ikura don ($22.00) is an absolute steal. This was the dish that we saw on Instagram that made us want to make reservations right away. For $22, this was a generous portion of fresh local uni and ikura. The briny ikura was fresh and full of flavour and the uni was sweet and fresh.
We thought that we would be happy with the Uni and Ikura don but when we saw the Uni-Sobe ($35.00) we knew we had to order it. This feature of this dish is Bafun uni from Hokkaido. Bafun uni is sweeter and smaller than local uni and absolutely delicious. It is a very expensive delicacy, so at $35 I think it’s a great deal. This dish is served with nori to wrap the rice and uni but we just went at it with a spoon.
Sashimi and Nigiri
Trudy had a selection of their nigiri – maguro, hamachi, hotate, amaebi, ikura and saba. The pieces were extremely affordable at $3 – $3.50 a piece. Each piece had a lovely sheen and was extremely fresh.
The chef sent us a plate of geoduck sashimi on the house. Continuing on the theme of tonight, the sashimi was very fresh with a nice crunch.
Our final dish of the night was the Sunset Roll ($16.00). This roll has salmon, crab, uni, and cucumber. The outside is covered in tobiko and oshi sauce. This was a good roll and the uni flavour was definitely present, but overall I felt that this roll was basically a California roll. This would be the only dish I wouldn’t order again, because it just didn’t wow me.
Overall, every dish we had was fresh and delicious. You can tell everything was made with care and love. The service was friendly and they were always on top of tea refills and clearing plates. Overall, I cannot recommend this hidden Steveston gem enough.
