Top 5 Cheesy Dishes You Need to Try in Vancouver

Who doesn’t love a good cheese pull? There’s something so satisfying about seeing ooey gooey strings of melted cheese stretch far away from the dish. There is no shortage of delicious cheese creations in Vancouver but if I had to choose, these five would absolutely be my top recommendations. Check out my list of top 5 cheesy dishes you need to try in Vancouver below!

1. Glowbal – Pómmes Aligot

Pómmes Aligot is an incredibly rich, smooth and stretchy French dish that combines mashed potatoes with melted cheese. The ratio is usually 1:1, so this dish is cheesy. When made right, the mash should be elastic enough to stretch from pot to ceiling without breaking a strand. Glowbal’s version features gruyère and freshly shaved black truffle and it is decadent through and through.

2. Hydra Estiatorio – Saganaki

Saganaki refers to various Greek appetizers that are prepared in a small two handled frying pan. Most familiarly is cheese saganaki. The version at Hydra uses Kefalograviera. This is a hard table cheese produced traditionally from sheep’s milk or mixture of sheep’s and goat’s milk. At Hydra, the Saganaki is finished table side with a fire and a flourish. In addition to it being an absolute table show stopper, this dish is incredibly flavourful and I find myself always going back for more.

3. Monarca – Queso Con Chorizo

Queso Con Chorizo is a delicious cheesy chip dream. The version at Monarca gets finished off in the broiler so the whole dish gets those delicious golden brown spots that we all know is the best part of cheese. The Queso con Chorizo features melted Oaxaca and Asadero Cheese, house-made chorizo and mushrooms. While queso is traditionally served with chips, at Monarca this dish is served with warm flour tortillas. However, you can always order a side of chips if that’s more your style.

4. H2 Kitchen + Bar – Mac & Cheese

I can’t have a list of top 5 cheesy dishes and not include mac and cheese! H2 Kitchen + Bar is serving up comfort Southern food, and you can’t have that without have some delicious cheesy noodles! The Mac and Cheese is a hearty combination of double smoked bacon, chorizo, pulled pork, gruyère, smoked cheddar and heavy cream. It sounds like a lot, however it was not too heavy. I found it to be the perfect combination of flavours without being overwhelming rich. However, I did have the side version as I ordered it with a healthy serving of meats.

5. Zoomak – Kimchi Jeon

Last, but certainly not least we have the Kimchi Jeon at Zoomak. This dish is new on the menu and part of their menu refresh. It features kimchi, bacon, mozzarella, and scallion. The jeon (aka pancake) is full of flavour from the fermented kimchi and light and crispy on the outside. The mozzarella cheese adds a great cheesy finish. While the kimchi is a strong flavour, it goes really well with the mozzarella. This is a must order dish for me, and I’m always torn between ordering the Kimchi Jeon and the Seafood Jeon (pro tip, get both!).
