Katsu San Richmond – Popular Spot for Japanese Tonkatsu in Richmond

Katsu San Richmond is a popular restaurant in Richmond for Japanese tonkatsu sets. I went by on a very rainy Sunday afternoon and there was a line outside already before opening. Within minutes of the restaurant opening, the entire place was full! Katsu San specializes in tonkatsu sets that come with rice, miso soup, salad and pickles. The sides are all refillable, and the staff is always on top of refills. The concept is similar to Saku. Check out my full review of Katsu San Richmond below.

Katsu San Richmond – Katsu Sets

Every Katsu set is served with unlimited shredded cabbage, rice, Miso soup, Tsukemono, Himalayan pink salt, and wasabi. To qualify for the refills, everyone at your table must order a set (excluding children under 10 years of age).

On my visit we went with:

  • Katsu San’s Assorted Tonkatsu Set
  • Katsu San’s Assorted Chicken Set
  • Ebi Hotate Katsu Set

The Katsu San’s Assorted Tonkatsu Set ($23.00) features 1/2 order of Pork Loin Katsu, 2 pieces of Cheese Katsu and 1 piece Ebi Katsu. It is the best set to order to try the restaurant’s most popular offerings. The pork was thick and perfectly crispy. I really like the garlicky side salad dressing (almost as much as the sesame salad dressing).

If you’re not a fan of pork, you can try the Katsu San’s Assorted Chicken Set ($24.00). This set features 1/2 order of Chicken Katsu, 2 pieces of Cheese Katsu and 1 piece Ebi Katsu. The chicken was moist and juicy with a great crunch from the panko.

I love scallops and prawns so I had to go with the Ebi Hotate Katsu Set ($19.00) which features tiger prawns and scallops. The tiger prawns were massive and the crunch was just top notch. The scallop was on the smaller side (more breading than scallop), so I think next time I’ll just stick with their assorted sets.

The Cheese Katsu is also a crowd pleaser. There is so much ooey gooey cheese and it’s so much fun to pull the cheese. It pairs really well with the thin layer of pork on the outside and the crispy panko coating.

Katsu San Richmond – Ramen

In addition to their katsu, Katsu San also has a few ramen options. We went with:

  • Nagasaki Champon Ramen
  • Hiyashi Ramen

The Nagasaki Champon Ramen ($17.00) features a tonkotsu soup based ramen with pork belly, fresh seafood, vegetables and tamago. The soup base has a very deep seafood flavour. There was plenty of seafood and beansprouts in the dish. The noodles were cooked well with a nice bite.

The Hiyashi Ramen ($13.50) is a cold ramen with a chilled shoyu based soup topped with fresh shredded green vegetables, cabbage, pickled radish, cucumber, fresh wasabi and tamago. The noodles were nice and chewy and the dish itself is very refreshing. It’s quite different then what I imagined it to be, but it was nice to try.

Worth a Try?

Yes! I can see why this spot is so popular. The food is delicious and the pricing is reasonable. It’s a great option for Tonkatsu in Richmond and if you’re in the area definitely give it a try. The staff is efficient but friendly and they’re always on top of refills which I really appreciate! However, they will never dethrone my favourite Saku.
